pilot problem in 1108q9b

Post by jcjordan »

I'm running 1108q9b & for some reason in running a turn, I can no longer get pilots in units that need them. Loading the turn before & the turn after in Tracker shows my pilot count going down by 50-100 pilots so I'm not sure if it's related to running out of pilot slots. No new units arrived on the turn either. Attached is the 3/30/45 turn. Look at the P47 unit at Eastern US on 3/29 you can add 1 pilot but on 3/30 you can't when it still needs 1.

I"ve tried culling a bunch of pilots on both the AI IJ side (though I could get pilots for any IJ air unit that needed it or could accept any) as well as Allied (me) side & still can't add any more pilots to any unit that needs or can accept one using the 3/30 turn. If I send pilots back to the reserve pool from a unit, I can then get pilots for that unit but not any others except if I do the aforementioned.

Even stranger now as I played 1 more turn & in looking at my air units, many of them have sent 1+ pilot to the reserve pool during the turn resolution. Most of those effected seem to be the units that have 24 or more a/c in them regardless of nation, land or naval ????? I've been running this version of the beta sicne it came out & have played several turns under it so it something more related to the date or pilot pools. Any thoughts on what is happening?

Attached is the 4/1/45 turn.

Sounds like it is culling 'over-filled' groups if going back to the reserve.
The 1-pilot 'get' issue in first post sounds like a rounding issue as 1/3 of the 25-plane group would be 8.333. So it seems to have some difficulty deciding on 33 or 34 pilots for the group, IIRC.
Can't see the issue but haven't had time to delve down too far due to work commitments. [Yes I do have a day job plus after hour support.[:D]]

I'll have a closer look towards end of the week at the saves.

I delved a little farther into the last turn & what is happening. The pilots going to reserve is actually affecting all air units, it just shows in the larger units first. If you look at say the B29 groups w/ 20 pilots send 5 to the pool, you're only able to add back pilots to get to 18. In looking at the math, it looks like there's some adjustment to the max pilots allowed in air units overnight on 3/30 that goes from 1.33 to 1.166 so from 1/3 to 1/6 overage. I looked through the manuals but saw nothing that mentioned this resize but it is the manual afterall. How many late war games have encountered this or is this something that cropped up in the betas by accident?

Speaking as another programmer, we are an odd lot.

Open source programs only exist for the most part because programmers donate their time on the side to make them happen.

I tried the saves under the EXE I just posted http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=2859420&mpage=34&key=&#
and it seemed to work okay - numbers were correct.

Only things fixed there were a sync issue and added stacking level for hex to top line of main screen.
There is also a fix for a -ve pilot limit, but that is not the case in the saves.

BTW, the overfill is 1/3 of the group max which means that you aren't running out of pilots yet.

Do you want to try that quick fix and see if the issue is still present??

[edit]
one of those saves has dropped the overfill to 20% rather than 33%. I didn't have that happen to me when I ran the first save for the next 3 days.
I'll see if I can find why that happened, but that does explain why your numbers dropped - using 20% overfill rather than 33%.
There are about 6K free pilots currently so it is possible that at some stage the limit fell enough to lower the overfill limit to 20%.

This is not stopping you from having enough pilots to fill out the group to its normal size, only to overfill it.

I'll give that a try Michael. In the 3rd savegame I culled (retired) a whole bunch of pilots from the reserve on both sides. Strange to me with the timing that it happens at the end of a month when resize things always happen.

Michael - I gave the 1108q9c a try & no joy for me, it did the same thing & I even tried 3 day turn instead of 1 day turn & it still did the same thing using the 3/29 turn

<snip> and added stacking level for hex to top line of main screen.

I assume this stacking level change is related to the new test pwhexe file that is discussed in the Scenario Design and Modding sub-forum. If this assumption is correct, what is the impact on the game if the stock hex file remains in use?

No impact. If anything it will show the island stacking limit.
