Strategy to Handle resource Shortages In Beginning

Post by grb1982 »

The Shortages that seem to stall my space ports in the beginning when I only have the Startrting Mines usaly are steel carbon fiber and polymer the way I handled this In my Latest Game was to Strip Down My Starting Ship Designs of as many Components that use these resourse while still being usful an Especialy armor exampe would be my constructer I kept the origioal design and copyed it reducing it in size to under 300 size. It moves slower and has less distance than it larger version but its cheap in resources quick to build and able to build mines in your starting systems. Also redsien cheaper smaller versions of your minning station. Build 4 of the small cheap constructers. the first thing each of them should build when they are complete is a steel mine folowed by a carbon fiber or polymer mine if you have those resources nearby then a carsolon gas mine to help with early fuel shortages make shure to buy proctection from the pirates for the first year. after the first year yous should have enough resource locations to start desiening new more powerful ships. I keep the small constructer design becaus there fast to build cheap to maintain and can handle construction closer to your sytems while your larger standard constructers handle more distant projects
A man from my country once said walk softly and carry a big stick. Well I say if you carry a big enough stick it realy doesn't mater how softly you walk.

I have certainly had to change my early game strategy in legends. Staking out early sources of critical resources is much more important than having a large early fleet, or even early colony ships.

Using this Strategy I Was not only able to get enough resources but with my slightly striped down colony ships I was able to colonize 2 other worlds in the first year with another colony ship partialy done

Indeed, that's a pretty good strategy. I tend to steer far clear from the Ship Design, though--both for my own sake, and to make the game more of a challenge. For people like me who have gotten used to the auto-designed ships, a definite change in overall strategy is a must unless you start in a very good spot.

How is the list of "critical" resources in the Expansion Planner determined?

Other than that, is it just a matter of looking at the Your Stock and Your Demand columns in the Expansion Planner and checking for a galactic shortage as well?

One thing I've learned from Legends is that one has to be sensitive to the 'flow' of resources and commerce before engaging in too much building. I try to find and colonize a 2nd world before I even think about doing anything extensive like refiting with altered ship designs, or large orders of ships. There's a delicacy in the beginning that really needs to be monitored closely. Shortages in resources can really exacerbate that delicacy, so I like to nurse what resources I do have until my empire has a bit of redundancy.

I just posted a guide related to this: tm.asp?m=2975910.

It deals with with resources you really need, what types of planets they're found on, what to consider when you don't have enough of a certain resource, etc.

Make every civilian ship obsolete at game start.

Use your constructors to build resource stations up to self sufficiency on every strategic resource, make more stations for steel, gold and fuel. Dont build anything else.

Unobsolete your civilian fleet after you finish all the stations.

Enjoy.
