the usual question.... any chance I can update and continue a 3.0 game under 3.1 or would that be as bad as "crossing the streams"?

You can continute PBEM games from 3.0 in 3.1. It only overites the EXE and OBC files, but since changes from 3.0 to 3.1 are comparatively minimal you can continue with 3.0 without any trouble (however, you will not gain the benefits of changes in the OBC files, you WILL get the benefits of the EXE file changes though).

Your 3.0 SAVE files should remain untouchched and still work under 3.1

There is no editor in the 3.1 update, but there are two Excel editor files in the 3.0 package. My advice is to use "pacwared21.xls" if you have a version of Excel more recent than Office 97.
