Howdy WITP

Been a bit since I logged in this forum. I was have not played my WITP original in some time :( mainly because i got a new monitor one of those widescreen jobbies.

Does the Admiral Edition scale to a widescreen monitor? Does it look okay in 1920x1080 on a 23 or 24 inch widescreen?

Might pick it up for xmas if it does.

Hope someone can help :)

Cheers

Indeed it does. Example from "WhatsNew.pdf" in the most recent official patch in your root install directory:

-f -px1920 –py1200 for a 1920x1200 monitor in full screen mode
-w –px1680 –py1050 for windowed mode, so that the window is
within desktop

So, you would used -f -px1920 -py1080 for full screen mode, and -w -px1920 -py1080 for windowed mode. Make sure you only have one space between each '-' and no spaces between the '-' and the command. Also, make sure you are using the '-' that is the unshifted character just left of the '=' key on most qwerty keyboards.

It sure does look beautiful at 1920 x 1080 and you can see vast expanses of the map at one time.  [8D]

1920 x 1080 looks great, you will never want to go back.

There is one small drawback with the map of the Guadalcanal scen.: It is
a bit narrower than 1920 pixels, which results in awkward stuttering when moving around the map.
Didn´t notice any other issue.

What's the minimum size monitor to make 1920x1080 work? I have a 19-incher at home, which I haven't tried this on, and am considering going larger, since size does seem to matter in this case. [;)]

EDIT: Changed to 1920x1080. I guess another question would be, "How do I know if my monitor is 1920 x 1200 if I tossed my specs out a long time ago?"

Thanks,
CC

Size is irrelevant. It is the resolution which the screen (CRT or LCD) is designed for that is important. I'm sure there is a 14" High definition (1920x1080) television on the market (it would make a TV picture look good but as a computer screen it would be unreadable...)

Google is your friend.... Just search on your monitor model and the word "specifications" [:)]

Thanks, Reg, for the quick response. After typing in that message, I decided to try Googling "Dell monitors" which told me a bit. I'll check for a model number when I get home. My initial research dictates I'll need to buy a new one to get that kind of wide Pacific goodness on screen.

Have been out of the WitP loop for some time, had moved to a different part of the country, and 'mislaid' my copy of WitP AE for several months in a storage box.
With a new computer and new monitor I finally got to load it up yesterday, and put in the code in the Quick Menu. The map is fantastic in 1920x1080!!!

Cool, I've got a new 1920 x 1080 monitor arriving tomorrow. I hadn't even thought about how AE would look. Looking forward to wide screen goodness!

I had similar problem with Guadalcanal scenario and 1920x1200 resolution. I solved this problem decreasing resolution from 1920x1200 to 1680x1050.

Hi Chem!

Welcome aboard.

Changing the map size with the editor is a valid way to fix things like this when playing the AI on your own machine. However, you now have a modified scenario and if you play someone else by PBEM it will trigger the anti-tamper routines on their machine unless you send them a copy of your modified scenario as well.

A much simpler way of managing screen resolutions is to create a number of desktop short cuts to WITP-AE each with a different screen resolution specified. You can then just open the game in the resolution appropriate to the scenario you intend to load and the change only applies to that particular gaming session. This will be completely invisible (and irrelevant) to your PBEM opponent.

To do this:
1. Right click on your desktop and select "New" then "Shortcut" then browse to the location of the WITP-AE executable ("War in the Pacific Admiral Edition.exe") then give it a useful name (I like to include the screen resolution) and click finish.
2. Right click on the new icon and select properties, select the "Shortcut" tab.
3. Edit the "Target" line with the WITP-AE command line including the switches for screen resolution. (I have included a few examples from my desktop below - note windowed and full screen examples). An explanation of these switches can be found in the "WhatsNew.pdf" document in your game folder.
4. Click OK to finish.

"C:\Matrix Games\WITP-AE\War in the Pacific Admiral Edition.exe" -wd -altFont -cpu2 -dd_sw -px1280 -py800
"C:\Matrix Games\WITP-AE\War in the Pacific Admiral Edition.exe" -d -altFont -cpu2 -dd_sw -px1920 -py1200
"C:\Matrix Games\WITP-AE\War in the Pacific Admiral Edition.exe" -wd -altFont -cpu2 -dd_sw -px1680 -py1050

This method is also how you can load different versions of the game (including betas) if you have multiple installations on your hard drive.

For your info I have also attached an edited image showing a standard screen overlayed on an expanded desktop (from someone with a HUGE hi-res monitor) which gives you an idea of the effect of different screen resolutions.

[:)] wow! fast and precise! thank you.
oh, of course i didn't overwrite the stock-scenario, i created a copy in a different slot.
thanks for the command-lines - btw, are the processor tweaks necessary?

chem!

You will not be able to edit the scenarios in the first 20 slots as they are write protected to prevent you accidentally overwriting them and locking yourself out of PBEM... [:)]

To quote the "WhatsNew.pdf" document.....

Try these switches in different combinations to see what works best for your system as what
works well on one may not be ideal for another. However, we have yet to find a system that
didn’t benefit at all from at least one of these switches performance-wise, so test them out!

I hope you found the info useful. [:)]

I'm using 1920x1080 on my 13" screen. Looks beautiful. Text is a little small though in-game...
