When to start taxing?

Post by Cheese »

I've got a few colonies up to around a billion(1000M) population now, leaving taxes at 0% so they could grow faster. I'm wondering when I should start taxing them, is there a revenue or a growth bump at some point?

The pump is anytime and the tax is useless below 100M.

That being said, a smart gamer would most likely tax colonies around 300M if he expands very quick, to finance the other dozens of colonies. A slower expanding player will surely let the growth kick in longer and tax them around a later date.

I'm usually a slow expander, but not always. Either way, I tend to stay below 15% taxes for any colony below 1000M--usually 5% is plenty if you have a bunch of 300-900M planets. After 1000M, I tax on a case-by-case basis. As long as you don't need the money, keep the taxes as low as possible to boost the Private sector. When you do need the money, or to maintain a bigger fleet, I tax a 1000M+ world all the way down to +10 or so Happiness.

I try not to tax higher than 50%, since I'm assuming there are unintended consequences for that, but I'm not 100% sure about it.

Well especially in corporate nationalism, where you kill 80% of your researchers and 50% of your culture with it. But hey we love 80% taxes!

I have yet to gather up the courage for a Corporate Nationalism game. [:D]

I have been successfully running with zero taxes until a world is at max pop. Then tax down to +10.

Well you can't set taxes higher than 50 percent from what I've observed unless you have Corporate Nationalism

I set the tax on my homeworld to maintain a 92% tax compliance, as long as they stay above [:@].

I set colonies with a revenue of 5k or more to +15 (or +16) happiness to keep them in the [:)].

Others I set at 0% tax.

I have set taxes higher than 50% on Democracy, but only on my homeworld.

I set homeworld to 25%, and then periodically ill check all my colonies.  Under 1 billion, 0%.  >1 bil = 10%.  >2 bil = 20%

I tax everyone as long as they stay happy at max - are there any unknown consequences - i do tax witgh the wa of the ancients and a monarchy above 50% - growth does not seem to be affected as long as people are still happy ;-)

I believe the 50% tax limit was removed with Legends. At least that is how I am seeing it.

Early on I tax my homeworld to oblivion most of the time keeping it just in the grey (exception being if private sector is broke and I want them to have money then I will drop it to 100% compliance). Nowhere else gets taxed unless I really need it until they are above 2000 million. Then I keep them at the threshold of 100% compliance, usually 17 happiness. Late game I keep all maxed colonies at 0 or 1 happiness and most others at zero tax.

Foreign policy can intervene if I have close neighbours who want to swap population with me.

...

No, the game I was just playing (Legends, Human, Republic, v1.7.0.7) capped out at the 50% limit.

Incidentally, I've ceased playing that game since money was not the issue but Caslon went to zero (despite having plenty of Caslon gas stations) due to the private sector freighters frolicking randomly all over the galaxy. I've decided the game is shelveware until something is done to give the players some way to indirectly designate or directly move important resources to where they are needed instead of allowing the freighters to wander willy-nilly in useless random meanderings.

I like the design idea of the private economy side for taxation purposes, BUT only if it works in a logical way. Can you imagine the world's oil tankers wandering everywhere but where they are needed? Exxon-Mobil would go broke if it operated like the tanker/freighters in DW:Legends. [:D]

I tax as much as possible while keeping people happy  - but below 300M or so revenue is zilch !
I see no tax limit, I can go up to 75% with my Quameno Technocracy, leader bonuses  and wonders keep everyone happy.

I have been regularly taxing my homeworld over 50% once my happiness allows (56-7% at the moment in my current game, depending on reputation fluctuations), and after taking into account compliance I get the tax at that rate. I'm playing 1.7.0.7, Human too, although I am running Way of the Ancients. You might want to double check Gandalf. If that is really happening in your game I would suggest reporting it in the tech forum.

The subject has already been brought up in the Tech forums... I'm waiting for the near term beta patch to see what if anything has been done about it.

From wiki;
The phrase may be used to describe national intervention in corporations, including outright nationalization where the state assumes ownership of the corporation.

Playing as Shandar I think I was able to raise my taxes to 100% and still have a 16+ or more satisfaction.  I'm not sure, I didn't go above 75% because I thought that was just mean.  I should point out I had no Spice, Fruit, or Fluid.  Because I could tax so high I was for a very long time only taxing my homeworld and the population on some of my other worlds then exceeded the population on my homeworld [:D]

This was by far my easiest ever victory, I didn't have to fire a single shot at any of the other Empires before I reached the victory conditions!

Started with a single colony on Harsh homeworld too!
