1.7.0.7 Out of Memory

Post by Yarasala »

My current (and first Legends) game is at an end because I cannot load it anymore, it gives me an out of memory error. It's a 1000 stars / 15x15 sectors game in end game stage.

When starting a new game, the game setup screen tells me that Large and Huge galaxies (that is, 1000 and 1400 stars) require 2 Gb memory. I have Windows XP SP 3 (32 bit) and 2 GB physical memory.

I know that before it was said that for 1000 stars+ you needed a 64 bit OS and at least 3 GB of memory, but because of that stated yellow message I hoped 2 GB would now be sufficient to play everything I want [;)].

Anybody able to clear that up for me?

P.S.: I played with some programs open that needed about 450 MB memory by themselves and didn't try to play with only DW open yet because since DW saves take several minutes and I save automatically every 20 minutes (because I regularly experience crashes, I had about seven or eight during this first Legends game, but since it's a beta that doesn't bother me too much) I do always this or that besides playing.

Also check your process'. I sometimes find a Distant Worlds process still running after I exit the game.

Also Yarasala, check your anti-virus software. Depending on how it handles scanning open files,
if you can put the Distant Worlds Directory in the software's exception list it should solve
your problem. I run a WinXP Pro SP3 machine and do all my DW testing on that platform for Elliot.
Once I placed an exception in my anti-virus, everything ran fine. This could be your problem. But
let us know if this doesn't work and we'll seek other ideas. [:)]
Shields are useless in "The Briar Patch"...

That is not the case.

I put the DW game directory and the DW savegame directory on the exception list of the realtime scanner, but it didn't help ...

I run out of memory on after a few hours of play. I then have to shut down and re-launch the game to play some more.

Hi Yarasala

On vanilla 32-bit Windows versions you will likely run into memory issues in late-game with large galaxies.

However Distant Worlds is compiled as "Large Address Aware", which means that it can use extra memory if it is available. This works automatically on 64-bit versions of Windows, but requires a tweak to work on 32-bit Windows.

Some info on "Large Address Aware" programs and why they are needed are available here:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows ... e/gg487508
http://blogs.msdn.com/b/oldnewthing/arc ... 23817.aspx

How to set up 32-bit Windows to properly support "Large Address Aware" programs is available here:
http://zone.ni.com/reference/en-XX/help ... _ad_aware/

Thanks
Elliot

I run the game on a 3 GB RAM laptop with Windows 7 (64 bit) and I keep getting out of memory errors - most notably while saving, which is particularly unnerving as it breaks the save.

I tried adding the game as an exception to my antivirus program, we'll see how it goes.

Well, happily the OP put his version number there...

The 1.7.0.7 had lots of out of memory bugs, patch your game.

Hi Solarius,

Are you running the latest version of Legends (it was just updated this week)?

Pleaes post a DxDiag and a Crash Log if you have one.
