What does experience do?

Post by Fraser1986 »

Hi all,

I apologise if this is something of a newbie question but I'm currently playing through the tutorial campaign and don't understand what experience actually does. Several of my units have 2 starts (ie 200-300 experience) but their stats don't seem to be any better than a "green" unit of the same type.

If exp doesn't increase statistics does it make the units better "behind the scenes" without showing you how they are better?

Finally I can see that experienced units can be overstrengthed. Is this something that should be done to all units where you can?

Thanks in advance,

Fraser

The first benefit you'll see is that experience is applied as a bonus to Initiative. If you CTRL+click when preparing for an attack, or if you hit L after an attack, you'll see that experience level (100, 200, 300, etc.) adds to that value. Makes for some veeeery extra punch before you get hit back. :)

And like you've already seen, a unit can be overstrengthed between 1-5 points based on their experience. Now, if that overstrength worth the extra prestige? Well, that's a personal choice for the commander on the ground (you!). Answering that all depends on your objectives, the equipment you have available, your available prestige, and all the other variables. Extra strength is VERY handy, but personally if the choice is between upgrade or overstrength, I go with upgrade most of the time.

I tend to only apply overstrength to fighters, level bombers, arty and any tank that is to secure a position across a river or during an invasion as it gives the unit that much more chance of surviving, but most of my units will not be made overstrength as they will take damage sooner rather than later anyway.
