Kiev 1942

Post by dana rudko »

I just had to relate what happened to Me (Soviet) vs my Germanophile buddy. Its Feb 1942 and I have just finished a successful first winter kicking Nazi from one end of the Ukraine back to the other. As a russian I had spent the proverbial first summer running like mad, watching tens of thousands of men perish while the germans would lose 10 men etc, etc.
So first winter comes and I am having the time of my life! Germans running from ME! Rumainians routing like the weak puppies they are... Well it was so much fun I pushed my Fronts from around Kharkov right back to the Dneipr River and Kiev, jewel of the Ukraine. Am I worried? Sure... I notice that I have stuffed 12-15 Armies into a large fat sack running from Dnepetrovosk in a huge curve right around the river to up near Byransk...yeah you know where this is going...it turned mud and I thought ...oh I should pull back...oh I got plenty of time...oh he is still too weak from the pasting he took in the winter...Well its August 1942 now and I have 12 empty army Hq's ...about 2 million dead and prisoners added to the Soviet stats. Yes and its just like 1941 again...I am running like mad!!!!

Run Forrest run! [8D]

I'm seeing basically the same thing. My 1942 summer campaign is a disaster due to both my own incompetence and Marquo's excellent play. In any case, the Germans are strong, as it should be, so fair play.

Even a strong Russian ( fewer than historical losses) can get his arse kicked in 42 thinking he is rising the power curve - from experience. The lure is that your Red Army 2.0 is so much cooler, but still nothing compared to wehrmacht 1.5. you need Red Army 3.0 to get anything done. There was an older game ( name prohibited from mentioning) that actually spoke to this in the designers notes. It more or less stated that Red Army 1.0 and 2.0 will get annihiliated, for slightly differnet reasosn, and once you build 3.0 you have a chance to reverse the ide.
