Morphing USAFFE into SWPAC HQ

Post by Heeward »

Any ideas on the best way to do this?

Why?
Cloning technology has not been invited (Douglas).
Simulates in one since the disorganized development of early headquarters development in SW Pacific theater.

I am planning on doing something similar with FE USAF and have it turn into the Fifth Air Force.

I understand I can re-name USAFFE to SW Pacific.

How do I model the restricted Philippine units?
What happens to bases attached to USAFFE after the name change?

I would like to also hear your thoughts on the idea overall.

It sounds like you might be new to the game? SWPAC HQ arrives a few months into the game with MacArthur as commander. So when USAFFE HQ eventually gets captured, the potential cloning problem goes away! [:D]

I know both units arrive in in the game, I actually propose to delete both of them, and the extra Douglas MacArthur.

Good luck. Sometimes there is no good solution, so you have to settle for least-bad. The least bad solution I found was to clone Doug Mac.

You can rename USAFFE to SWPac, but you cannot change a permanently restricted HQ to an unrestricted HQ, and SWPac needs to be unrestricted to evacuate it from the Philippines. But if USAFFE starts unrestricted, then you can evacuate all the Filipino units, too.

You can try some tricks by attaching all the Filipino LCUs to the Corps HQs and making them static/restricted, so you can make USAFFE/SWPac unrestricted without affecting the Filipino units, but that's clunky, and can be gamed, too.

Moreover, SWPac was not formed from the evacuated remnants of USAFFE. Even before MacArthur and a very few of his staff were evacuated to Australia, the US had already formed a HQ to command US forces in Australia, and this morphed into SWPac after MacArthur arrived. If no one had escaped from Corregidor to Australia, there still would have been a SWPac.

Of all my contributions to the AE team, adding Mac's doppelganger is the one I am least proud of. [:(]

If you can find a better way, go forth and mod!

A possibility that occurred to me last week, while looking at the situation with afloat commanders, is to separate flag rank officers' personal staffs from the HQs. Give the flag rank officer an unrestricted squad strength unit to represent their personal staff, keep the existing setup with units assigned to the HQ, but then have the HQ report to the flag rank officer (and a house rule that nothing reports directly to a commander but his current HQ). For naval units it needs cruisers and above to be tweaked to be able to carry the commander's personal staff squad, but for land based units things are simpler.

I haven't gone anywhere with trying this out, it's just a thought experiment, but it's one that would let MacArthur or any other commander move between different HQs in a quasi-realistic manner, you would even have to fly them around the map. The problem is that it might completely break the WITP AE model and make the commander's ratings ineffective, particularly at sea.

Not being a big Mac fan - he is the only serving US general to twice be defeated by a smaller and lower tech enemy army - in both
cases because he didn't go look at things for himself - I simply releave him and retire him - no cloning needed!

But constructively, it may be there are other options. One can separate units and report to different commands. For example, if the Marines
report to Asiatic Fleet - and if Asiatic Fleet is unrestricted - the Marines can evacuate (or attack in a different direction more traditionally put).
One might have other units in a similar situation - Navy base forces in particular - but possibly Philippine Scouts.
