Picking up land units

I am having major problems picking up land units. I have figured out the size of ports, but even smaller APs seem unable to pick up land units most of the time. For example, I wanted to move the Commenwealth units near Lae to Rabaul.[:@]

For units at bases with ports I normally put the land unit into Strategic Move status. Do units need to have ops or pre-plan for sea movement?

They have to belong to an unrestricted headquarters. If there is an R at the end of their parent HQ, then they are not allowed to board any ships.

You have to match your LCU (land combat unit) mode to the task force type. LCUs in strategic mode can only be carried by Transport TFs. LCUs in combat mode can only be carried by Amphibious TFs.

You may have trouble loading / unloading LCUs in strategic mode from small ports (size 1-2). Most players use amphibious mode to move LCUs to/from small ports.
