grouping questions

This exciting new release is a faithful adaptation of the renowned Conflict of Heroes board game that won the Origins Historical Game of the Year, Charles Roberts Wargame of the Year and the James F. Dunnigan Design Elegance Award, as well as many others!

Designed and developed in cooperation with Uwe Eickert, the original designer of Conflict of Heroes, and Western Civlization Software, the award-winning computer wargame studio, no effort has been spared to bring the outstanding Conflict of Heroes gameplay to the computer. Conflict of Heroes includes an AI opponent as well as full multiplayer support with an integrated forum and game lobby. To remain true to the core gameplay of the board game, the PC version is designed to be fun, fast and easy to play, though hard to master. The game design is also historically accurate and teaches and rewards platoon and company-level combined arms tactics without overwhelming the player with rules.

grouping questions

Post by jcrohio »

I feel that learning to use groups is a huge part of this game. But right now I am struggling with this concept. How and when are you guys using them? Do you form a group and then keep using it until all the APs are gone? Are you using them to group move or just group fire? I have tried to use them in a few games but just don't seam to accomplish much with them.

One problem - I tried to use a fire group in my last game. Had three rifle units that all were fresh, all had a clear LOS to a machine gun unit, all had individually an 8% chance to hit the machine gun unit, and all were next to each other. I figured this was a great place to try group firing. Grouped them and place the cursor on the machine gun and there was still an 8% chance to hit. If I understand grouping there should have been +2 to the firepower but there was not.

Any help and/or suggestions would be greatly appreciated

I don't know the exact mechanics but I've been experimenting with groupoing.
I found that it's useful to move big chunks of your force cohesively without the enemy countering your every move.
I also do group fire but I have only used Rifle + LMG combos. There is an advantage.

But the problem with grouping is that all members inherit the lowers Action Points of the group.

To answer the first part of the question, it's best to make sure that all units have roughly equal APs at start and finish as when you disband the group, all units will have their APs set to the lowest in the group.
Other than that, it doesn't matter what their initial APs are, you just need to consider the ending APs to make efficient use of the group.

For the second part of the question, it's difficult to say purely from the description but on the surface it sounds like a bug.  If you have a save or screenshot, we may be able to provide more specific information.

To the first bit:

I mostly use group moves. Since the implementation is a bit different from the board game I only group units of equal AP Value and who all want to do a move that costs the same. I then give the whole Group 1 Cap to finance the group move. This will often allow you to bring a large formation closer towards the enemy and with a few CAPs you can bring the group close enough to the enemy line that you can then start splitting it up and assault their seperate targets.

Apart from that I use group moves mostly to rush positions, since he can only ever react to one of the multiple units moving you can be pretty certain that some of the units make it to short range and get a shot off.

I mostly only use Groupfire if I have to take out a unit with this one shot, because I expect pretty big return fire (like the KV2 in it's scenario). If you have time to spare it will usually make more sense to take the shots seperately.
The only times I do gladly use it, if goign with the group fire takes me from needing to roll an 8 to a 7 or to a 6. Here the extra chance is actually worth it. Another interesting area is, when it would take you to a 3 or a 2 required, since then you get that increase of chance on the outright elimination of the unit.

As to your "bug": i am not sure, if it has been implemented this way in the computer game, but supporting units in a group fire have to have the target in normal range and not in long range. Maybe the target was outside regular range and hence even when selecting the group it did not give you the extra FP.

group firing will only count adjacent units to the fire leader-not units that are continuous. So your fire leader must be in the middle of 2 adjacent units to get the +1...you have 4 units strung out and try to group fire them, the most you are going to get is a +2: the fire leader and +1 for a unit to the right and +1 for a unit to a left. They have to be adjacent. And, as in the board game, units and long range do not count for group firing.

Thanks all of you for the replies - I am going to sit down, go human vs human and just play with groups. Going to try some of your suggestions and see what I can do. Again thanks
