Couple of questions

Gary Grigsby’s War in the East: The German-Soviet War 1941-1945 is a turn-based World War II strategy game stretching across the entire Eastern Front. Gamers can engage in an epic campaign, including division-sized battles with realistic and historical terrain, weather, orders of battle, logistics and combat results.

The critically and fan-acclaimed Eastern Front mega-game Gary Grigsby’s War in the East just got bigger and better with Gary Grigsby’s War in the East: Don to the Danube! This expansion to the award-winning War in the East comes with a wide array of later war scenarios ranging from short but intense 6 turn bouts like the Battle for Kharkov (1942) to immense 37-turn engagements taking place across multiple nations like Drama on the Danube (Summer 1944 – Spring 1945).

Couple of questions

Post by mantrain »

hello, Well, I was watching history channel color of war, and this really pulled me back into WITE. It's been more than a year. I am somewhat rusty. Hoping someone can give me some pointers. for instance:
How do you select specific units for bombing assignments? I right clicked into the air group, and when I see the listing of various units, I am not able to select any particular ones.
Also, is it ok to allow the AI to do the recon and some of the bombing missions?
To what extent need a player fuss with the default air doctrine settings?
Any other basic things one should know when playing this game?
thanks!

No, you probably just have to wait more than 3 hours for replies. International timezones = some people are sleeping, others are working... cheers

It's also partly because, I think, a good many of us, myself included, are somewhat perplexed [&:] by the complexity of the air system and don't feel competent trying to explain it.

Personally, I let the AI do most of the work at this point and just live with it, although I hope to get better at the air war details going forward.

I do not let the AI determine recon missions. I direct where I want the missions to go and let the AI select the specific planes. I don't think that there's much to be gained by taking the time to worry about exactly which planes fly which recon missions.

I do adjust the air doctrine fairly frequently depending on what my priorities are at any given time. For example you don't want the computer to assign tons of close air support to an unimportant attack that you know you're going to win anyway.

I say just have fun and learn the game as you go along. You can learn a lot by reading some of the many excellent AARs.
Rufus T. Firefly: Do you realize our army is facing disastrous defeat? What do you intend to do about it?
Chicolini: I've done it already. I've changed to the other side.
Firefly: What are you doing over here?
Chicolini: Well, the food is better

for me air recco is done first by AI
then if some places seems strange (holes, det2...) i will make some more
make few airbase or ground attack, majority of my planes go for support
if you make attack, choose your staging airbase then indicate your target holding "arrow" (above Ctrl)
hope this wil help you [&o]

If you want to determine which bomber and fighters for that matter go on a particiular mission. Just hit the Shift key and a little box will appear where you can select or deselect planes for the raid. Then when you have done all your selecting click on "launch".

Hope this helps.

SHIFT + RIGHT CLICK to open the unit selection screen. I think you can select the staging base, but right now I cannot check.
Also, is it ok to allow the AI to do the recon and some of the bombing missions?
Usually I let the AI run some "first recon" missions, but I also run manually some (heavy) recon mission in areas I plan to attack etc.
No AI for bombing missions for me.

Yes, moving a fighter airbase closer to the front and using this to stage is a good way to reduce unneeded travelled hexes.
You have to selct the base you want before right clicking on the target hex.
AI cannot be trusted to make intelligent decisions for bombing.
I wouldn't trouble myself with selecting bases for recon.
