MSW's for Fast Transports?

Post by ADavidB »

I've noticed that when I make Minewarfare TFs of the Allied MSWs, the US MSWs have the option of also being "Surface Combat" TFs, while the Australian MSWs have the option of also being "Fast Transport" TFs. However, the Australian MSWs have a capacity listed of "0". So in this case, what role can they play in a Fast Transport TF, other than sweeping mines?

Thanks -

None. They are a valuable asset in any task force going into hostile coastal waters. (for mine sweeping).

Thanks. Now I have to figure out where to put mines so they stay around long enough for some TF to run into. It appears that all the interesting "choke points" are too deep to keep mines in for long.

Seems odd that mines would dissapate that quickly in short water.

I personally hold to the USNs philosophy at the time and only use mines defensively or in places where I will never go (Truk for example). Not to mention I hate allocating subs to do minelaying.

And the manual talks about mines stayin around in shallows longer. Use the F2 key to see the shallows and start tracking the "high traffic" spots that are shallow water. Try putting mines there.

Just a thought.

Sometimes Aussie ports begin the game with friendly mines in them, although nothing has ever run into them (might be a bug). Otherwise Murphy's law makes certain that even a MSW or two won't prevent that fat juicy BB of yours running into one of your own mines in an enemy port! Mines are a last resort defence I only use when I'm loosing.

FYI, for what it's worth you CAN use the Allied DMS and DM units as fast transports, they have the same capacity as a DD, 200 points. I don't do that much, because those units are valuable and vulnerable enough on Mine Warfare runs, but just an FYI>

Okay, thanks - I'll have to try that out.

I wonder why there is no "capacity" listed?

I'm pretty sure that the Japanese MSW DON'T have the option of being in a Surface combat group because I tried to put them in one and the only type of mission I could do was MSW or transport. Was this changed in 1.30? Or maybe you are talking about the destroyers converted to mine-sweepers.

Sorry - I've been "switching sides" in the discussion. My original comments were about Allied MSWs. It's in mid discussion that I started to speak about Japanese Mine Layers. I should keep my trains of thought in separate threads. Moshiwakearimasen deshita ;)
