Yeah, I can't find anything about it in the manual either but I would assume that the green triangle defense rating is the survivability of the unit and the red ratings are the ability of the unit to deal damage to enemy units while defending. At least then most of the stats would make sense to me.

About Russian infantry: I don't think that is so unreasonable, if we go down to the individual level - the worse performance of the Russian units can be reflected otherwise, for example with morale, officer rating, support weapons in each division etc.

I believe column 1 refers to a unit's status at the beginning of the combat round and column 2 refers to the unit's status at the end of the combat round.

Basically combat on individual to individual basis is randomized attack score versus randomized defense score. If attack ends up higher the attacking individual scores a hit.

If attack or defense score is indicated with 2 values like 100/50 it means the first value is used by the side thats on the offensive (trying to take the hex) and the second by the side thats on the defensive (trying to hold the hex).
