squads equivalence

Post by fulcrum28 »

I think one Assault infranty squad may be equivalent to 10 soldiers.
I would like to have a rough idea of the casualties, so how can we account for Machine gun if it is reported 30 losses?
Does it account for the machines each itself or the squad that manages them?

With casualties, you mean men? Not squads and such? So, you want to present (or imagine or whatever) losses as men lost?

In TOAW a weapon listed as disabled in the combat report is either damaged (sent to replacement pool) or destroyed. You can access this info by using TOAWlog (on a per battle basis) or by counting losses in the replacement info screen (on a per turn basis).

I can't give you any rule of thumb or anything. This also depends on the scenario designer's view. Some designers include every man, platoon HQ, weapon crew etc in their TOEs. Others only the squads in the normal rifle companies while they see the MG equipment piece as crew + weapon. Then there is artillery. How do you see a piece of artillery? Only the gun itself or gun+crew? Some, including me, add some rifle squads to artillery units. I add roughly 1 Light rifle squad per battery to model close defence to some extent plus include the unit's MGs. Others don't add rifle squads or MGs to mere artillery units. Others include them all..

thank you..yes..that was my questions. is it more or less accurate to consider 10 men per one squad in average? it may fluctuate depend on the countries and the time period though.

And yes, it is easy to consider this equivalence for infantry squads, but I was confused when consiering MG or artillery squads. I think i can consider artillery as number of pieces.

where can i find/save the TOAWlog of a battle to compute the battle losses clearly?
I can do so in the replacement info screen but it could be great if it is written in some txt file.

First, you have to set it in the game options; the log itself will be placed within the root directory of TOAW. To visualize combat results, I recommend to use 'Onkel Larry's' Combat Result Viewer, see tm.asp?m=2711227&mpage=1&key=&#2711401

Squads. Yes 10 men and fluctuating.

All else is a piece of equipment. A gun, a MG etc..

TOAWlog: You must set TOAWlog = Y in the opart 3.ini file (You can open the file with the standard Windows text editor). When you play the game battles will be logged in GREAT DETAIL in a file named toawlog.txt in the game folder.

Yes... but Larry's program uses the .csv file generated by sitrep ON.

TOAWlog is usefull to look "behind the curtain". Actually it's easier to count losses from turn to turn with the replacements screen. Except if youw ant to do it on a battle per battle basis, Pionier does this sometimes in his AARs when he writes that so many of these tanks have been damaged and so many have been destroyed.

I know Meister. I should have clarified it; I focused on his question regarding the losses. Yes, the SitRep has to be activated in the games options, the TOAW_log.txt with a command switch. Getting old...
