A Great Site on the Imperial Japanese Navy

Post by KG Erwin »

With Complete Carriers at War coming in 1st qtr 2013, I thought I'd mention a fantastic site on all matters relating to the IJN: http://www.combinedfleet.com/kaigun.htm

I know many of you are familiar with it, but for the few of you who aren't...

As a bonus, here's a cool music video with scenes of the WWII IJN in action: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i8ZWerveuPw

Thanks for that KG. Wow, those IJN Battleships are simply monstrous.

What impresses me more about the IJN was the creation of the 1st Air Fleet, which was comprised of 6 large aircraft carriers (Akagi, Kaga, Hiryu, Soryu, Shokaku and Zuikaku) and over 470 planes. For a short time in 1941-42, this was the most powerful concentration of naval aviation in the world, and they basically ruled the Pacific Ocean.

....... Until Yamamoto decided/was forced (depends who you believe) into splitting the Kido Butai - whoops.

Epic fail (to use a turn of phrase seemingly popular with school children at the moment).

Another cool video I found after the one KG linked to. Contemporary 3D animation is an amazing technology. I can't wait for the day someone does a whole documentary series covering the entire pacific war in 3D animation. (or the European front)

Warspite: Yeah they had a couple that still floated but weren't much good for battle, they probably would have used them as Rams (shades of the Greeks and Romans), if we tried an invasion. One of the heavy crusiers actually made it through two test and is now beached on one of the many little atolls in the test area, she's a scorched mess of tangled steel but she floated their on her own.
