Question on control/courier...

Post by GBS »

I am Hood with a Division under Longstreet. I want to move my division where I want it to form in LINE and face say, NW. With Hood highlighted, I click on the objective on the COMMAND MAP, I click on LINE under formation and I click on take roads. Three couriers go out to each Bgigade Commander and they all set out marching in Line. I have to send another courier telling the brigades to form column or they would never get to the objective. Now, when they arive at the objective they stay in column and do not form the battle line formation that I originally wanted.
I can send a message using the courier screen and things work better in that they march to the spot in column and then form the line but being a Division commander I have to compose a message for each brigade and can't just do it by highlighting me, the division commander (in this case Hood).
This is one part of the game that I hope continues to be worked on as I think it needs improvement. I was disapointed that the 1.5 patch didn't address the courier system at all, which in my view is the heart and soul of the game.
Any helpful advice would be appreciated.

To double-check, I just tried your first method, using point and click on the command map, and my regiments marched off in columns, got to their destination and formed up in line. I was a brigade commander. I am just trying it again as a division commander and all my regiments are marching along in column nicely.

This is how I normally issue road marching orders and it seems to be still working fine in 1.5. I can't think offhand of reasons your game is acting different.

The patch, btw, has addressed one courier issue - pathing - for which I am hugely grateful! My game seems also to have stopped behaving weirdly when courier messages are countermanded.

Not sure this helps any - sorry!

The courier system is actually quite good for moving troops around. To move a unit anywhere on the map give these commands all in one order:
1. Move to location
2. Face a direction (north, south, etc)
3. Assume a given formation
4. Give a stance (hold, attack, etc)
5. Use roads (if appropriate)

Your troops will then head off to their destination via the road system and fall into the formation you want when they get there.
Secession is futile.

Thanks guys. Marching, I know I can send the courier message as you propose but I have to send it to each of Hoods three brigades. Also, I want these brigades to march to a spot a half mile away or so and the form up in a Division battle line. I was hoping to do this by highlighting Hood(me) indicating where I want the division to end up on the command map and then clicking line so the division will line up with all brigades side by side in line formation. Now If I am Longstreet I can sent the one courier message to Hood and he will take care of things but in this game I am a division commander in a Corp vs. Corp battle......see? I received a message to go to this place and defend it. I, as Hood, am just trying to do that.

I think you'll find that sending orders to your individual brigades and batteries is the way to go. That way you can position your men along ridges or behind streams which are almost never straight. But you can do it the way you want by using the command map and toolbar.

1. Turn yourself in the direction you will want your division to face when it gets to its destination.
2.Call up the orders map by pressing the 'N' key and click where you want the center of the division, (you), to be.
3.Click on the formation you want your division to assume.
4. Click Use Roads, (if appropriate).

Your entire division will march off at once.
Secession is futile.

Can this all be done with the game paused?

That's helpful Marching, thanks. I never thought about changing my facing before issuing the orders.

No, not with the toolbar version. But if you use the Courier&Maps mod, the game will pause while you use the written courier system.

MTG, once you get 'posting links' privileges, you might want to post this link in the 'Mods and Scenarios' section. I'd do it, but I feel links should have the author's signature up front.

Thanks guys. The problem is I don't know how to mod and I'm not very interested in learning. It is a shame you cannot issue orders while paused (should be a basic feature in this day and age) and because of this, I will not purchase the game.

You don't have to learn to mod to use this. You simply place the mod in the Mods folder, and enable it 'in game'. Mods are game enhancers, the quality of the game usually being defined by the number of people modding it. SOW has a lot of mods with an efficient and user friendly system for modding or including mods.
Modders rarely spend their time on crappy games. Sprinkling nuts and putting a cherry on top does little for a turd.
