Low morale axis air units

Post by hugh04 »

I have just started a new pbem game as the axis player. We are at turn 5, axis has moved waiting on soviet moves. The axis has made good progress on the ground, but I have noticed that all my Stuka's have a morale of 10 or so. I did not turn ground support on for the first 2 turns, though I am doing manual bombing of key hexes whenever possible. Also, I have moved air bases to keep up with the penetrating german army. While some transports are getting near a 50 morale, rest of the air force seems to be doing well from a morale perspective. I have made no leader changes.

One thought is that since I am at the end of the axis moves, there has not been a chance for the logistics phase to kick in and allow some morale recovery. However, Stuka's with a 10 morale seem's to require a trip to the national reserve for 2 or 3 weeks for some R&R. Never paid much attention to my air force in the past so I am confused. Anyone with any suggestions explanations?

yes, I've noticed the same thing, and all my Ju-52 groups had morale less than 20, while all the fighter groups were above 90...

The fighters get morale bonus for shooting down enemy aircraft. The transports never have such incentive, so they only take fatigue and morale hits from losses. A feature of the air model, good or bad (IMHO bad, tranports should be rewarded for transporting like fighters for fighting). Probably only rest and/or sending to reserve will help to rebuild the morale.

what i make when playing axis
each turn units with poor moral go to reserve
send back one from reserve
this trip give 15 point of moral (if i'm right)
from beginning some airbases are over loaded
you need to make some transfers

Up to 15 points, but the higher the morale the less is recieved.

I do the same as Soviets with new air units. They train by going to an airbase in the rear and back to reserve. Once a unit has higher morale than worst unit of it's class in a front airbase, I switch them. When there is a lot of trained units in reserve, sometimes I increase the number on the front.
