Ship Design Sharing

Post by Shark7 »

Did we ever get a kind of exchange going to sharing our optimized ship designs? Just curious as it would make it a bit more interesting playing with other folks designs.

I don't think that it ever really happened.  One or two people posted a couple of design sets in the early days...

Maybe someone (like you [:)]) could make a real attempt to kick this off when 'Shadows' releases and there is a lot of activity happening.

Although I support the idea I find that (other than base tech starting designs) most of my designs are specific to game situations rather than generally optimized.  I find that my ship designs are often dictated by what tech I have at the time and that is highly variable from game to game according mainly to the proximity of neighbours and the variability of tech bonuses from ship retirements.  I love the replayability (i.e. 'redesignability') this entails but it means that I rarely have designs I use from one game to the next... even assuming I am the same species.

At the beginning of a game, I start with a pre-saved cutomised set which corresponds to my general gameplay and, like feelotraveller, adapt the design to the situations I come across, as well as the the new technologies I discover during the game.

Here is the original thread calling for designs. I believe me and a few other people worked on some. I ended up making 3 or so. A few others made some too. Make sure you get the lasted ones, most were updated over the coarse of the thread.

long range torpedoes and shields, trade for efficient engines from the akadians (sp?)

defeats pretty much everything 100% of the time.

my small escort ships can make pirate cruisers flee after a short battle.

most starbases cannot handle the long range bombardment my ships offer.

i suppose theoretically i could have issues with fighter bays, but i never have.

Torpedos as main weapon, fighters and torpedo bombers as secondary (when size limit is greater than 400).
One (or two) Ion Cannon on every ship (sometimes it can really help, or speed up things).
No less than 5 point defence weapons on each ship built for offencive purposes. One or two on those which are made for defence in mind.
High regeneration rate shields and lots of armor.
Reactor type dependent on resources situation.
Energy effiecent FTL Drivers - believe me - it is really good and make a diffrience in long wars when You must strike enemy far away and do not have resupply ships.
Speed at least 30 when attacking (do not remember which one that was).

I much prefer missiles over torpedoes as they don't lose power over distance and use less energy to fire. Only draw back to missiles is the size they take and the 50% less damage on armor which makes finishing off a ship sometimes difficult. I rarely lose battles with Zenox's well shielded missile equipped destroyers with orders to standoff better armed ships.

You also research anti-fighter cannons to upgrade missiles which is always useful.

The only race I have problems fighting against are the damned Slukens with faster engines and railguns that close in to point blank and by-pass my shields... pesky creatures [:@]

Hmm, maybe something I need to work on a bit.

See I'm not looking for the super awesome uber design, I just want designs for each race to make them a bit more unique.

Examples:

Shakturi have torpedoes on all their designs

but

Humans favor missiles on theirs

while

Boskara use more shields than other races

See, something that makes their designs unique, not necessarily a fleet killer.

I don't think there is such thing as a 'super awesome uber design'. The game is quite balanced and every advantage a weapon gives is clearly compensated by a drawback.

The only good design is the one that suits your game style, and the best design is the one that fits the purpose you set for it.

I would never be crazy enough to fight the Shakturi with the same ship design that rips Naxxilian ships apart, or the one I use against the silvermist.

I agree with that...

Still that isn't not what I'm looking for. I just want to be able to share so maybe I can choose a boskara design set by one person, and a Securan by another. Let's completely forget about uber designs...how about just some standard 'share what I use' stuff. [;)]

i have experimented with the thought of making a supermassive "explorer" type vessel that uses one of the ship types with no limit in size. it would basically return to its home system only every few in game years to refit to any new changes or designs it needs to continue its mission.

but i cant remember if that got patched out or not.

anyways, shark, if your curious what kind of ships each race would build, you will just have to use your imagination.

i could imagine atuuk being likely to never build ships much larger than destroyers, preferring to swarm an enemy.

i can imagine the securan being unable to engage in any real kind of war, preferring to retreat under all but the most overwhelming circumstances, preferring long range battles and just downright surrender.

some races i always laugh at when i see tho, like the naxxilian, falling usually meant t-rexes died, it must be embarrassing for them when they go into space, maby thats why in all my games they never have more than a half dozen worlds.
