Anybody done Korean War OOBs?

Post by sami heimola »

I remember that someone did some Korean War scens. But has anybody done any NKPA or Comm. China OOBs? I know that SPMBT includes them both but it could nice to play same in SPWAW too:p...

Just asking,

Sami

Hey Sami,

A special team and I are working on a Korea project for SPWAW. I can't say more than that right now.

One can, without changing OOB files, create very good Korean Scenarios. Everything you need is there.

Sounds good WB;). I know that US/British/Australia OOBs can be used as they are now but how about North Korean OOB? Just using Russian OOB? And how about South Korea? Flags?

I miss those North Korean-South Korean Flags. A UN flag would be even better!

So we'll make do with Russian and US flags for the moment. The dates are also a problem, but we'll just have to pretend that they are the 50s.

Tell me, Sami, can you add a flag into the game without having to touch the basic code? You guys did that with SPCW, didn't you?

And whatever became of that fine project?

Ok guys, two quick things here, that are pertinent, first, WB, 2 fellows are testing it, thank you very much for that!! Secondly, with about 5 minutes of fooling around with the spwaweditor, and the mech exe, I got the name South Korea to appear in all menu's, in game, and in the oobeditor!! The dates are hard-wired though, 1930 would be 1950, so you theoretically could play up to 1969. Can't change those though, except with Freds wawedit for scenario's. Couple the flags changed in the above mentioned shp files, and these, you can do Korean War environs!! I used the two spains, since they are already long names. The problem also lies with the leader names, I don't know which bytes in the mech.exe, that the names for Rep. and Nat. Spain start?

Perhaps you and I should think about a Korean variant for this one. Most of what we need is here and I came come up with some Korean names.

We have Canadian, UK, Aussies, Belgium (?), France. We might need Turkey, NKPA, ROK, and CCF flags. We can use USSR forces and change names in editor for the Communist forces though the CCF is already there.

Nationalist China should stay. I have no idea where Nationalist and Republicans are in the game.

Might work!

North Korea is fun but tedious.
Weapons were a hodge-podge of captured Japanese from the Manchurian Army, captured Nationalist US weapons, Soviet and Chinese weapons. Sort of fun to flit through the various OOBs and round up the needed weaponry. But is work to do.

Korean names are tough - I finally found a few and used them over and over again. But if someone still had SP3 working, it should be easy to get some names from there.

The pictures are a pain as they always have been. Makes it tough to switch weapons. In older days, it didn't matter so much because there were so many errors, no one would know what was going on anyway.

Add Viet Minh to the list and some real good early battles from late 1940s through 1954 would be possible. Viet Minh weaponry would resemble North Korea a great deal so shouldn't be too hard to produce.

Viet-Minh

Yes, Redleg, Viet-Minh would be an excellent addition.
Weaponry would not be a problem at all.

Yes, Vietminh could be nice addition too:D. How about 2nd Vietnam War too? There could be difficulties with copters... OK, I know that SPWAW's resources are limited but still we can dream about expanded timelines (even into 1969, theorically) :p... Maybe with J. Wood's modern OOBs sometimes?

Hmm, btw, have you ever thought that someone could add Arab states-Israel 1948-9 and India-Pakistan 1947? These wars are not much handled in other war games (only "Divided Ground" comes into my mind). Both wars had WW2-based weapons so they are doable, aren't they? What do you think?

And about WB's question about my SPCW project. I'm very sorry about slooow process what we have now:(. We have some problems which need to solve. Matt Reeves made great looking icons for us but he seemed to left project (lack of interest? Who knows...) :(. I and Bob Toncray have fixed errors from some OOBs what we have in 3 beta scens. Bob will fix one of them. Jester makes map of Chickamauga. Rest of guys have not much responsed to my emails lately:(... Maybe they have other duties right now? And where is Jess Housley? Some days ago he wanted to do whole Gettysburg campaign but I never got any message from him after that:confused:...

If you anybody want to help us (with maps/scens/menus etc.), email to my private address:

Matt is a senior in high school and he is probably madly in love at this point

I think either L.. or some other gamers may have enticed him away from the group with other offers.

You have a great mod as is, Sami. The amount of work done on it is impressive.

Let folks know where to find it, how to load it and I think you might get some renewed interest.

Poor Jess is having some serious health problems and must attend to his own needs. I wish him the best...and you too!

Sami, I agree with Bill on this one. If all that's holding you up is scenario's, and campaigns, just release it, the gamers will supply the rest!! I did that with my Allied Bulgarian mod, for EFII, just released it, with no scenario's included, but let the folks know that was so. That shouldn't be a problem, I for one, am stoked to see your fruits of your efforts!!:D

Thanks about your support WB and Warhorse;). Hmm, so you propose that we would release only icons and OOBs? Why not... It could solve our menu problem (there are some things which need to be changed). But I must ask about this from my team at first OK? But we could make those 3 beta scens completely ready and release them other stuff. Jess has difficulties with health? Hopefully he will be OK soon... I must ask if Bob Toncray would make that Gettysburg campaign (of course he would do it after release too)... I would like to give players something to play too:p. Agree?

I will tell team's opinion soon.

Thanks about idea anyway,

Sami

Sami, what is the problem with the menu's, you mean changing the present artwork for them?

Well, we had "dream" that opening screen could be more suitable for item and menus had 3 "what-if" flags (Bob Wallace's idea originally). But during progress I wanted to remove them because we had hands full of work anyway... In fact I have not installed Bob's menus (we use default menus until someone fix modified menus) at this moment.

If you want help us, use my private address OK? This all is bit off-topic eh;)?
