The name of the game
For starters I say that I usually don’t care about political (in)correctness and frankly I believe that playing with words like ‘a post delivery person’ or ‘a sanitation consultant’ is rather silly. However, I would like to raise a question about the intended title of the War In The Pacific –Struggle against Japan.
IIRC, I once saw somebody else saying something about the title before, but I wasn’t able to find the thread to check what has already been said, so I’m sorry if I’m digging an old pile of…something.
Anyway, like I said, I would like to raise a question about the title.
Now the word ‘War’, rather strikes me as an unpleasant word…No seriously, why does the title have include the addition ‘Struggle Against Japan’?
What’s wrong with just ‘War In The Pacific 1941-1945’?
If the ‘against Japan’ part is there as marketing gimmick to give a more dynamic and thrill packed touch to the game, it might as well be left out. It’s not like the game is directed to an average Pearl Harbor (awful flight ‘simulator’) or Red Alert player and therefore I fail to see the importance of such a ‘marketable name’.
If anything, I suspect that such a name might serve (if any at all) an adverse effect among the more historically and objectively minded people –especially those who are not Americans (Don’t know about Aussies, they are a funny lot, go figure them).
Whatever the name is, it is not really that important, but it still would feel a bit funny to play as Japanese and then be struggling against yourself.

Victory Games published a game entitled:
War in the Pacific- the Struggle Against Japan 1942-1945. It is my assumtion that this is an adaptation of that game and therfore has its title.
As for the name, it does not bother me in the least. WWII was a struggle against both Germany and Japan. However, in the Pacific it was mainly Japan. There is no contradiction or contention with the title. I think it fits quite well.

Well... I hope you made your latter remark as an obligatory joke or as a silly remark just to stir people up a bit.
On the other hand, these days you just don't know, so I write an answer for that just in case.
As a Finn, the WWII from my subjective (Historical) perspective was against Soviet Union. For a German it was against...(fill in)...for a Japanese it was...(fill in)...do I need to go further?
Your first point was far more reasonable.
Thank you for that. I didn't know about the board game.

It probably had the addition to avoid confusion in the Australian market.
You obviously haven't been over here long enough to know that the Pacific Theatre involved two very different struggles. One involved our soldiers against the Japanese, the other our women against American servicemen.
Exactly.
Avaguday.

Struggle against Japan
Greetings, I don't think it is (will be offensive) to the Japanese but I kind of agree all the player who choose Japan will not have a good working title. I like "War in the Pacifc-the Greater East Asia Co Prosperity Sphere is Born"

I'm not retreating, I'm attacking in a different direction!

I do not agree with you my friend:D Its too long and not very commercial sounding. What about:
War in the Pacific-Total War 1941-45
Dan
Being Silly
Hi, Dan I was kidding. Really it should be "War in the pacific-Mogami's Rampage"
(note:this title works no matter what side I play)

War in the Pacific- Budweiser's war against Sake
How about “War in the Pacific: Banzai! 1941-1945”
Actually, I just like “War in the Pacific”. As a player who always plays the Japanese side I do find the current working title to be a bit biased. Maybe “the struggle between Japan and the West” would be a better title. Even “the struggle WITH Japan” would be better than AGAINST.

Re: Struggle against Japan
It will only offend the extreme right wing in Japan. But that's a good thing: offending them makes them show their true colours. It's when they're quiet, polite and reasonable that they are at their most dangerous.Originally posted by Mogami

That should probably be "... the Greater East Asian Co-prosperity Sphere is born in answer to the Western Imperialists."I like "War in the Pacifc-the Greater East Asia Co Prosperity
Sphere is Born"

It's much shorter in kanji, if that helps any.

tohoku
YMMV
hey new title
Greetings, How about "War in the Pacific-Grognards at play"????

I'm not retreating, I'm attacking in a different direction!

Or, instead of "the West," perhaps "The Struggle Between Japan and the Allies" ??Originally posted by Yamamoto

Or, "The Stuggle Between the Axis and the Allies." ?? (I know, Germany didn't do much in the Pac, but neither did Russia or France).
Just a thought.

The exact title of the Victory release is "Pacific War - The Struggle Against Japan 1941-1945." Other than the similarity in subject matter, the Matrix/2by3 rendering and the old Victory paper-and-cardboard game have nothing to do with each other.Originally posted by mjm800

World War II was a struggle that involved many nations, some "struggling" on one side, some "struggling" on the other (with the occasional change of sides, as with Italy). To include the expression "the struggle against Japan" indicates that the player or players in the game will be "struggling" against Japan.
Personally, I plan to play both sides with alarming frequency. To illustrate the inartfulness of the current title Matrix/2by3 intend to use, consider that "War in the Pacific - the Struggle Against the Netherlands" is neither more nor less a mischaracterization of the game.
I fully agree with those who argue for a change. The current title is a non sequitur. May I wax creative for a moment (yeah, I know, I'm a wordy dork, but look, I'm having my pendantic fun here, okay?). Some ideas:
Rising Sun, Soaring Eagle: The Pacific War
War in the Pacific: The Gods Stand in Awe
Fast Ships and Brave Men: World War II in the Pacific
Pass the Ammunition: War in the Pacific
Honor and Glory: America's Struggle Against Japan
Venus on the Half Shell (sorry, I couldn't resist)
In any event, I would like to see a little flowing of the creative juices. C'mon, you apes, you want to live forever?
And maybe this could turn into a contest with a little gratuity (say a free game) for the person who creates the name that is ultimately used ...?
Thanks for gettin' me started, mjm. Maybe you and everyone else would just as soon I shut up.
