Trouble running divided galaxies

I installed Starships Unlimited Divided galaxies. When I tried to start the game either from the start menu or the game menu all that happened was that the screen went blank for a moment and then I was dumped back out to the desktop. I installed the patch to version 1.2 but this did not improve the situation.
