Have a problem when I start up my game. My desktop does not show the game selections(that is the game initializes but it shows brown rectangular boxes but no letters) What I don't see are the words "play game", or 'play saved game"

I uninstalled then reinstalled the game. Initially when I installed the game all the selections were present. I did make a windows update (I have win 8) recently, that's when I started to have problems. I was thinking that maybe my laptop does not have enough graphics memory.
