Allied mines kill allied ships

Post by topeverest »

Life seems to be full of new lessons.

As the allies, in invaded in a non-base hex and then laid mines in the invasion hex with some Dutch minlayers (as I normally do). I lost 3 ships to allied mines in that hex on the turn I laid them. I obviously am missing something here. Can anyone explain where I am missing the mark?

Thanks,
Andy M

You aren't. Own mines can sometimes sink own ships. Minefileds aren't exact.

Lay mines in a base owned by you: sometimes they sink your ships but usually they sink his ships
Lay mines in a non-base hex: sometimes they sink your ships, sometimes they sink his ships
Lay mines in a base hex own by him: sometimes they sink your ships (usually when you go back to thicken the minefield), sometimes they sink his ships
Start in a base hex owned by you last turn with mines in place but he takes base with ground forces: they sink your ships but not his.

After many friendly mining incidents I have a simple little rule, not shipping movements in a mined hex for 2 days. Don't know why, but after those 2 days the number of mining's seems to drop significantly.

After two days of discussions the mermaids cement the mooring cables to the sea floor and all is well. I was told this by a Navy mineman, so it must be true.

Real sorry Moose... but mermaids aren't real. Another invention of Hollywood or Coca Cola, to sell movies and other stuff. I myself think the reason is mine mental fatigue, which causes mine depression and stops it working. [:-]

I mined an enemy base that I was attacking and then lost two of my British DDs when running in to bombard. Sometimes it is not a good idea to mine the enemy....

Mermaids probably are real. Just not sure about Bullwinkle.[:D]

I've always believed mines degrade over time due to exposure to all those coffee grounds dumped overboard from Navy ships. Makes the water acidic and rots their innards.

See, I knew that the movie "Splash" was real. I had doubts about Boris, but knew that Rocket J Squirrel and Bullwinkle weren't.

I hate mines because they don't like me.

I love mines, and lay them every-time I can. So much so that when I really need some, my mine pools are normally empty. I just don't put them anywhere, that I'm going to be having a lot of shipping movements.

Ah, you kids today with your "Splashies." In my day we had REAL mermaids. Here's a photo I saw in my childhood. The guy was a US Navy mineman. (This Is No S**t.) ("How do you tell a sea story from a fairy tale? (tm))

This confirms my suspicions, that Bullwinkle is actually 86 years old..[:D]

Who is the woman? At first I though she was a very young Donna Reed. Lovely.

Well mermads were real once, but they died out since they only have oral sex.

Mines have no minds......

Reminds me of a story I wrote during Co-operative Best Effort '99

"The mine is the perfect soldier ... it stays exactly where you put it until it does it's job".

But unfortunately, mines can't tell friend from foe, or peace from war.

I'm running huge convoys in and out of mined Japanese ports, and have been doing so for over a month now. Not a single "friendly fire" issue. Does it make a difference if the mines are at the start and/or end point of a journey, as opposed to hexes you are transiting through? Does the presence of ACMs make a difference? Back when I was running Allied convoys, I had the same experience (i.e. no incidents), and there too it was all cases of start/finish in mined ports.
