7.5cm KwK 37 L/24 - capable of bombardment?

Post by BigDuke66 »

Just working a bit thru the Estab and stumbled across the "7.5cm KwK 37 L/24", it is listed as being capable of bombardment and I wonder if that is really possible, especially in the vehicles it is used in:
SdKfz 250/8
SdKfz 251/9
SdKfz 234/3
SdKfz 233

As none of those vehicles is used in a formation capable of bombardment this is not a problem in absolute terms... should it be 'capable' of bombardment? IMO yes ~ as should all other 'artillery type' direct fire weapons... but only in direct fire mode (which should also be available for most other artillery... with some limitations...)

The 'limit' of searching fires for indirect fire is around 50% of the maximum (nominal tube) range of the minimum increment ~ any closer than this and dead ground blocks too much for useful work. (This is around 15 degrees descent angle, which is probably still a little 'flat' for best effect).

However many field guns have limited carriage elevation, and their normal maximum range is only just over this '50%' of the nominal tube range ~ yet they remain capable of 'gunfire' barrages over open sights. Restricting this to direct fire only prevents Field Guns from engaging terrain or unseen targets, or from engaging multiple co-located targets in the same terrain element... but permitting barrage fire gives these guns an unrealistically high effectiveness against 'most' targets and the ability to fire from dead ground that isn't really available.

Well one unit type seems to use it:
BB - 2PzD - 7.5cm IG - 251/9 Plt / Pz Aufkl Bn

But with only 2 251/9 in it I guess it really doesn't matter if the gun can, cannot, should or should not bombard.
Thanks for the info.
