Is it possible with this game to play both sides, either by 'hotseat' or self-email?

Hotseat is definitely out, and because the serial number of the game is checked each time you try to go on the server, I think you would need to buy two copies of the game in order to get two different serial numbers in order to have two different personae on the server.
