Another Windows 8 Issue

Post by donkuchi19 »

I have updated to the newest version of WITP. I purchased a new ASUS laptop with Windows 8. I have a nvidia GTX 670 MX video card.

Here is my problem. Game loads fine and goes right to the game. When I try to scroll around the map, I get a huge lag in scrolling. When I click on a base, it takes a several seconds to open the screen. On Windows 7, it was almost instant. Planning a turn takes probably 5-6 times longer than it did on my old computer. I changed compatibility mode to XP and Windows 7 with no change. (Yes I changed it in the .exe file and not just the icon)

I thought I might try it in windowed mode, but there is no option to change that in the .exe file. There is in the desktop icon, but that one doesn't work for the game.

Any ideas? I still have an older XP computer I can play it on, but I would prefer using my new laptop.

Okay, got it working better, but not perfect. I moved the .exe file to the desktop and changed it to windowed mode there. It works much faster now. I just wish I could make it bigger as I have a 17 inch screen on the laptop, but am only using about 2/3 of it now.

You can make it bigger.

-px1500 -py800 makes the window 1500X800.

Does that go after the -w? I tried it there and the window stays the same size, but I can only see about 1/4 of the screen now.

Got a PM about what I did to fix my issue:

Here is my work around:

Here is what I did.

#1 - Go into your Hard Drive (Usually the C drive) and find the Matrix Games folder
#2 - Find the War in the Pacific Folder
#3 - Inside the War in the Pacific Folder, find the War In The Pacific - Application
#4 - Right click on it and choose, send to desktop (create shortcut)
#5 - Go back to your desk top and find the new WITP Icon and right click on it
#6 - Select Properties
#7 - Choose the Compatibility tab
#8 - In Compatibility mode, click the little box to get a check and change the drop down to Windows XP (Service Pack 3)
#9 - Go Shortcut Tab
#10 - In the Target Box, after where it says, "C:\Matrix Games\War in the Pacific\War in the Pacific.exe" , add a -w
#11 - It should look like this - "C:\Matrix Games\War in the Pacific\War in the Pacific.exe" -w
#12 - Hit apply
#13 - Start the game from your desktop shortcut and you should be able to play it in Windowed Mode

This problem also occurs in WITP-AE. In WITP-AE there is a command switch "-deepColor" which cures the lag. I seem to recall that such a command switch is also available in WITP but I can't confirm it. If so, it will probably cure the problem for you also. I think this problem occurs because Windows 8 does not support DirectDraw.

I ran a test using the -deepColor switch. It appears to work and eliminates lag. Setting your graphics card control to "maintain aspect ratio" will also eliminate elongation of the WITP screen.
