Game crash - Can anyone translate?

Recently bought the game and expansions but can't get it to start.
OS is Vista home premium SP2

Keep getting this error:

Had the game install .net and directx even though I already had both.

With my limited pc knowledge I can understand it has something to do with WMP and when I try to run the Intro movies it instant crashes and gives me this error:

Can anyone help me understand what the problem is and hopefully fix it?

You need windows media player to make the game run.

Try to test it on some other sources to verify that it works correctly. If you did remove it, undo that.

Have media player it's a part of vista and can't be removed.

If I try and install it it tells me there is a newer version and it wouldn't continue.

Well, yes, media player can be removed, but that is not a good idea.

Can you play music and view movies with your wmp?

Tried the various sound and movie files in the game and it seems I can't play mp3 or vmv, both formats leads to the crash in my first post. Only the wav files will play without problems.

Tried installing a codec pack (k-lite) but same problem.

If you fail to play the files in DistantWorlds\Sounds\Music\ in windows media player, something is very off. Especially with that codec pack.

I would try to reinstall the media player. No guarantees, though.

On win7:

Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Programs and Features

On the left, turn Windows Features On or Off.

Media Features. Uncheck Media Player.

Reboot or whatever i asks of you. GO back and enable it again. Try the mp3s. Try installing the codec pack. Try mp3s again.

Unfortunaly I have Vista and can't fix it that way.
If reinstalling WMP is the only solution I guess I have to wait playing this, apparently, great game till I need a reinstall of vista or finally get a new pc ... oh well

Well, your computer is broken. Doing that to the WMP should not be hard :)

Everything else works fine. I play several other games and can play the mp3/vmv files in other players but not WMP.
Since WMP is a integrated part of Vista it can apparently only be repaired/reinstalled with a vista CD which I don't have.

The game does crash alot on vista. I found the latest beta patch does make it run somewhat better then before. I also found that I can not run games larger than 700 stars. Also turn off auto save, that cuases my games to crash. Do your saves manually every few hours and make sure to keep a couple copies so you can roll back to a earlier point if the file become corrupt. Also shut down the game every 3-4 hours and re-launch, I fine this allows me to play longer.
