The online game clock; why does it skip around or jump time?

I was playing a few online games were my opponent got upset becouse it looked like the online game clock was giveing me more time than him or the clock apeared to take time away from him. As I was the host they kind of insinuated I was responsible for this. Nothing could be farther from the truth; as most of you know you set the time in the preferances menu for BOTH sideswith ONE time setting besides that my life isn't so screwed up I have to cheat at a game to get some satisfaction out of playing .:cool:

I know game lag has to do with this a bit but does anybody have any other answers? I do my arty plottng near the end of my turn and I know the turns woun't swap till I'm done with the arty menu but I don't think thats what they are complaning about.

Any answers? Ideas?

I just consider it one of those things translating between the game clock and the system clock. The system clock keeps very accurate times to keep up with the processor functions, but the game is rounding to the nearest second (or there 'bouts).

What I think is going on is that the actions in the game cause a delay in reading the system clock as you move, fire, whatever. If you're playing on-line the game trys to sync the clock every so often and so it jumps a bit as one computer or the other takes the lead in the time count. I'm not sure if that's exactly what is happening because I don't know how they coded the sync instructions, but knowing how networks sync for timed operations I wouldn't doubt something similar is going on.

If you havre OP fire ON, your opponents time drains away, while you decide whether to shoot or not.
I always hated using op fire on, in online games.
Dont know whether you had it on or not, but it sux with it on in online games, especially if your opponent leaves the room or something!!
you sit there watching the clock tick away and can only stare at an hour glass!!
