Payload question for Kates

Post by 1EyedJacks »

I seem to recall that the Kate TB flew with either Torpedoes or 800kg bombs. When flying w/o torpedoes my Kates are flying with 250kg bombs when attacking enemy task forces...

Range of attacks with Kates against enemy shipping has been within normal (recently 1 hex away).

Is this WAD?

Playing Secenario 2 and running version 1.7.11.23h

I searched the WhatsNew PDF for TB, 800kg, & Torpedo and didn't see anything that implied a change has been made to TB payload. I suppose my recollector could be on the blink... [8|]

250kg bombs kinda bounce off of armored flight decks and allied battleships and it's pretty easy to burn through my torpedoes in an attack or two...

The 800kg bombs were modified artillery shells made especially for Pearl Harbor.

Were they not 14" battleship gun shells modified?

Should have done my homework first.... here is what the The Pacific War Encyclopeida says: "Designated the Type 99 Number 80-3, the converted (16 inch) bombs were streamlined to improve penetration and carried 22.8 kg (50 lbs) of high explosive. However, production was slow and only 150 of the bombs had been completed by mid-September 1941." So they were 16 inch shells converted, not 14 inch... sorry. Hal

I wonder if they only made 150 bombs or did they keep making them over the coarse of the war? I was looking at the default payload of the Kates and the bombs are the 250kg size...

Short of going in and trying to mod the payload of the TBs it looks like I was probably only able to use them at PH as Terminus suggests.

I just seem to recall having those 800kg bombs throughout the war but I could be thinking of WiTP games...

Oh well - it is what it is. Thanks to both of you for the answer and insight regarding the 800kg munitions.

800kg bombs could be available for Kates if certain conditions are met and rolls rolled the right way (I think exp/skill over 70 plus luck)

The 250KG bomb was the standard weapon on a CV as it was the one the Val could carry. Remember the Kate was normally a torpedo bomber and only used as a level bomber when the torps ran out or the distance was too great.

In game, the B5N2 will use 800kg on port attacks as torp replacement with correct rolls.

Oh! Jolly good, dear chap. Port attacks. I don't think I'd have puzzled that one out. I reviewed my turn 1 results to confirm the damned things had actually used them at Pearl Harbor and then figured from Terminus' response that they were now a turn 1 feature only.

Thanks!

They will be used throughout the war. I've only seen this on port attacks though, not naval. Naval, it is 2x250kg I beleive.

Yup, 800kg bomb is exchange for torpedo in Japanese port attacks. It works for EVERY plane carrying torpedo (so also BETTYs), and depends of experience of pilot, and random roll.
