HE and AP

What do these abbreviations stand for in relation to weapons? I'm pretty sure that AP stands for armor penetration. I searched the most recent manual and they speak mainly of 'changes' made to the calculation of these 2 things but nothing specifically about what they are.

HEAT = High Exposive Anti Tank (i.e. a shaped charge)

APCR= Armor Piercing Capped Round (or is it Composite?)

German tanks have APBC - Armor piercing ballistic cap.

APFSDS - Armor Piercing Fin-Stabilized Discarding Sabot (hehehehe)

Hades is right about APCR. The capped round is usually abbreviated APC, Armour Piercing Capped.
The evolution version from it is called APCBC, Armour Piercing Capped, Ballistic Capped. This type of ammo has two caps, one blunt one to prevent the round from ricocheting and then a more streamlined on top of the blunt cap to improve ballistic performance. Also brits had the APDS round, Armour Piercing Discarding Sabot...afaik this was used already around the end of the WW2 but the accuracy of the round wasn't anything spectacular. Oh yes, and the US called APCR round HVAP which means 'HyperVelocity Armour Piercing'

I've heard somewhere that HVAP = High Velocity Armor Piercing, but anyway, it's the same thing

Just Some Explaniation:

AP rounds are designed to punch a hole through armour purely with their kinetic energy (i.e. speed). They are generally used against tanks. Thye can be used against AFV's, but the round might just go through and do little damage. AP rounds are pretty useless against infantry.

HE rounds are shells with some explosive inside them. If they're designed to be used against tanks (HEAT rounds), they depend on a jet of molten metal to penetrate the armour. HE rounds are great against AFV's and troops, but may not be as great against the tank due to their lower muzzle velocity.
