confused?

Command Ops: Battles From The Bulge takes the highly acclaimed Airborne Assault engine back to the West Front for the crucial engagements during the Ardennes Offensive. Test your command skills in the fiery crucible of Airborne Assault’s “pausable continuous time” uber-realistic game engine. It's up to you to develop the strategy, issue the orders, set the pace, and try to win the laurels of victory in the cold, shadowy Ardennes.
Command Ops: Highway to the Reich brings us to the setting of one of the most epic and controversial battles of World War II: Operation Market-Garden, covering every major engagement along Hell’s Highway, from the surprise capture of Joe’s Bridge by the Irish Guards a week before the offensive to the final battles on “The Island” south of Arnhem.

confused?

Post by henri51 »

I am a bit confused about this "new" game. I have HTTR, COTA and BFTB, but I am unclear to what this new game brings other than a patch. Is this really (only ) a COTA with the BFTB patched engine? Discussions with a potential CO2 mixed up with the discussions about this new game adds even more confusion.

In sum, what does a guy like me get, and why should I buy this game?

I believe the major benefit is playing the older HTTR/COTA scenarios using the most modern version of the engine (with all the updates and changes since COTA/HTTR) available that will continue to get supported in the long term. If your satisfied on how they play in the original versions and don't want to take advantage of the new engine fixes/enhancements, then not upgrading is certainly an option.

Buried deep in the various forum discussions is the fact that the new game engine hosts a much more robust artificial intelligence component for both enemy forces (in a human vs. AI combat situation) and for how forces are controlled below the level that the player acting as "commander" chooses to control his / her force.

In addition, the newer combat engine offers a broader selection of what I know as tactics, techniques and procedures used to achieve battlefield tactical goals than the older combat engines offered.

Leads to a broader command and control experience for a player than available in the earlier game engines.
Take care,

OK, but it would be nice to see some AARs done with the new "rules" so that one could see the differences.

Unfortunately, the AARs I've seen aren't written at a level that allows comparison between game engines based on the scope of available tactics.

They discuss commander decisions and results that lead to a conclusion for a particular scenario without consideration of the engine used to complete the scenario.

Take care,

Hello,

I to would like to know what game engine improvements there are, also. I have HTTR and BFTB for scenarios of which there are still plenty to play. It would be nice for more scenarios, but game engine changes are what is going to make me bite. Particularity wrt to current ambiguous, for which I understand, development path. Is Battle of Greece, early CO2, or some other CO1 game engine changes.

regards,

david

davidx..the game engine is the game engine..no difference between BFTB and Greece..Greece is a scenario and OOB expansion pack..letting you play the old Greece scenarios that came with COTA but using the latest engine i.e BFTB with the latest patch.

It's the Greece scenarios from COTA updated to work with the latest game engine i.e BFTB. So put it another way they are new scenarios for BFTB that are set in Greece and these scenarios where also in the old COTA game.

I'd recommend you to check out the review I posted about here

since it's answering your questions in a more articulate manner than I would be able to.
