Thanks. I see what you are saying. Scratch that plan.
So squad AT value would be based on the armor penetration of the squad's main AT weapon I take it?
Also what about "soft attack" value. Is it based on some sort of factor of the main squad LMG? Or is it based on the number of weapons and of what type the squad possesses?
As always thank you for your guidance on these matters.
EDIT: Woops, just saw your second post. I'll look at it closer before I ask anything more about "soft attack". Thanks.
Ok, so Companies were made up of a ton of different squads and teams over the years. Another reason to aggregate.
FX, a not typical, but deployed in places, 1941 US Inf company had 4 platoons, each comprised of 3 rifle squads (12 men each) and a BAR squad (8 men), along with Pltn HQ. The rifle squads had rifles (Springfields, and then maybe Garrands). The BAR squad had 2 BARs and a mix of rifles.
So a rifle platoon would have 2 BARs and 42 rifles (3 x 12 + 6), but not quite. Your BAR squad had 2 gunners, 2 assistant gunners, 2 ammo bearers, an NCO and a Lance assistant with rifles. Given that marginal people on the sharp end are abstracted into the Support requirements, you end up with 38 rifles (3 x 12 + 2) and 2 BARs.
Then the Company had 3 60mm mortar teams (technically 19 troops total, but realistically 12 – a mortarman and 3 security rifles. The rest assist or hump ammo and are Support.
Then the Company had 2 M1919 LMG teams (technically 14 troops total, but realistically 8 – a gunner and 3 security rifles. The rest assist or hump ammo and are Support.
So add it up. A Company gets 129 [3x(36 + 2) + 9 + 6] rifles; 6 BARs; 3 60mm mortars; 2 M1919 LMGs. So that’s 140 guys and whatever the weap math shows for firepower. Assume, for grins, that firepower totals out to 152 (with Springfields). Now you have a choice. You can have 14 squads (of 4 different types; 9 rifle, 3 BAR, 1 mortar, 1 LMG) in a Company, or aggregate and define equivalent squads.
So 9 squads with 15/16 men and 17 firepower?
Or 10 squads with 14 men, and 15 firepower?
That’s why the Japanese Company has 3 platoons, each with 3 squads having 1 LMG and 12 rifles and 1 squad having 3 GDs and 9 rifles, totaling out to 156 troops and 180 firepower, which ends up being a GAME EQUIVALENT of 9 Inf squad of 17 men and 20 firepower per infantry company.
A Japanese Bn has 4 inf coys, plus support. US Bns have 3 inf coys plus support. Brits have 4 inf coys plus support. This 4:3 (or 1:1) ratio is extremely important in game terms. When the US gets Garrands and BARs in each squad, the algorithm shows up well. The Japanese will shoot at the US at approx. 3:4 and lose proportionally more devices. The survivors AV at somewhat less than 4:3, but perhaps still at a slight advantage. Same with the Brits, except the starting AV is 1:1, but the Brit firepower is less so the Japanese won’t lose proportionally more devices and when AV time comes, it’s still 1:1.
Number of squads in a unit, firepower of a unit, number of men in a squad (load costs for divisions) are all, and each, highly important. Any changes to one MUST require judicious review and a change to each and every unit of each and every opposing nation where warranted.
