Off to the races - A journeyman's assault of the Marianas

Post by Mike McCreery »

Ok, 2nd attempt at the Marianas islands. The assumption on this run is that the allied code breakers were successful in obtaining the exact OOB of the Japanese on the islands and the knowledge that the KB cannot reach the theater for at least 2 weeks.

This scenario really isn't about a fair fight. The KB does not have the firepower to go head to head against the Allied Air Fleet. The scenario gets its interest from the limited time frame to take the islands. It is more about the efficient movement of amphibious forces and supply than anything else.

After looking at the map and evaluating everything I agree that taking Pagan would be an asset even though point wise it is not worth addressing. Therefore, my first troops will leave directly for Pagan and the second group of troops will head for Tinian.

In the previous game I planned on staging troops out of Makin & Tarawa but during this game all troops are heading directly for the Marianas islands in combat mode. This position saves a number of days converting troops from combat mode to strategic mode.

On the first turn all of the troops do not have supply at Pearl Harbor. I am going to concentrate on the 8 regiments that do have supply. I am loading the 6 regiments attached to the V US Amphib Corps along with the amphibious HQ force. These forces will take the island of Pagan. That is about 860 points of AV versus the 100 AV of the troops on Pagan. I loaded them all on APA and APD ships due to the speed of these craft. It will be important to take out this island quickly so I can concentrate my fleet and air cover in one hex rather than 2.

I put together 3 Air Combat TF's containing all of the CV's and CVL's at my disposal. This fleet is going to sail west as fast as possible to do a little raiding before the transport fleets need air cover. Submarines have been dispatched. I have set Eniwetok as their base.

Setting the bombers on Eniwetok & Roi-Namur to airfield bombing and choosing night bombing because I dont really need to deal with the fighter CAP.

I set the special troops HQ, engineer, and other forces I know will be moved in transport mode to strategic movement.

At this point I believe that trying to load more troops than the 8 regiments might be counterproductive as the port size has been exceeded so it is likely time to end the turn. I also know that quite a number of amphibious ships will be arriving within the next 2 days.

You might also want to look at the air unit commanders. Some of them are not very good. Same with sub commanders.

Assembled Amphibious task force of 6 regiments along with 2 TF's of 5 CVE each, a bombardment TF, and an ASW TF and set them to attack Pagan.

Loaded the 27th inf div, the 306th RCT & 111 RCT & several tank battalions.

May 25, 1944 Day 4

The main Air TF did not move like I wanted it to. I think it was due to following and/or having a minesweeping TF follow them. Disengaging that force.

Combining the ships for fleet #2 and setting Eniwetok as the destination.

End of Turn

Japanese CMc took 2 torpedo hits near Guam.

By now the KB should be on the map. However, it is not much of a threat to me unless I run low on sorties and since my main task force has not engaged anything yet I am in great shape.

Tinian task force out 3 days.

End of Turn.

Allied Attack at Pagan

In the middle of the reports about Tinian you have a report on bombardment at Saipan.
Did you mean to write Tinian?
If Saipan was correct, was this an aerial or naval bombardment?
If naval, what was the minimum range setting and what types/numbers of ships were bombarding? And how did you deal with mines and subs?
No matter how bad a situation is, you can always make it worse. - Chris Hadfield : An Astronaut's Guide To Life On Earth

You are correct, it was Tinian not Saipan.

I dont dare attack Saipan without giving it a good beatdown first.

I havent run into any mines yet.

Subs are getting repeatedly hit by dauntless on search.

June 12, 1944 Turn 22

I made a mistake and never unloaded the 4 regiments from Pagan. I have to send them back. that is both good and bad news. My disruption on the troops on Tinian is high and I am only going to gain a large advantage by leaving the troops there on defend for a turn or two while the others land. I have troop transports waiting to unload base forces and engineer units on Tinian so I am going to sit with the whole fleet on that spot until I get fully unloaded.

I havent gotten any real attacks from any of the outer islands (iwo jima, ulithi, yap). I can see 69 ships in port in Peleliu but honestly killing the KB is not the primary mission of this scenario. And I will have plenty of time. My next big objective is to fully capture Tinian and have most of the troops on Guam within a week. At that time I have to send a division size transport fleet back to PH to pickup a unit that will be arriving. 2 weeks later I have to send a force capable of picking up 2 more divisions. By that time I need to have most of my forces on Guam and be pounding Saipan down.

End of Turn

Night of attack on pagan by 3 nell - no damage

I am hitting truk and ponape nightly with liberators but have not done any significant damage. on the other hand I have not taken any significant damage so it is a wash.

Ok, unloading all the support troops brought along from PH. Unloading supplies, etc.

Loading 2 regiments at Pagan bound for Rota.

Sending my main air TF west toward Pelieu. I can be next to the base in 2 turns. Depending upon what happens a port attack might be possible.

Set troops on Tinan to defend for this turn.

A minefield just showed up at Tinian. So far I have been very lucky...

Transferred a squadron of Ventura's to Tinian

The base is still badly damaged but I will be offloading construction engineers this turn.

End of Turn.

Japanese sub hit 33 times and is sunk near pagan.
