Do carrier air squadrons train when the ship is in repair?
Or should I remove them before?

RE: Do carrier air squadrons train when the ship is repair?
They should train if give them a training mission. I always have my CV air units train when not on the front or transiting.

I don't think they train while the ship is in repair mode or anchored. I try to always unload my CV squadrons when they're disbanded in port, both to continue training as well as to act as a fail-safe in the event of a port raid by enemy CVs. To that end, I usually use a 40/40/20 split for my fighters, with 40% on CAP, 40% Training and 20% resting. DBs and TBs get to train at 100% and 0 hexes on whatever skill they need, but usually that's NavSearch for DBs and ASW for TBs.

I'm also a bit doubtful about them training and that's why I asked
..

They train if in training mode.
RE: Do carrier air squadrons train when the ship is repair?
So planes fly off carriers to train even if they are in the shipyard and the flight deck might be busted? Doesnt sound logical to me
. Just an argument..

Think of it as them operating from the shore installation.
You should still be able to access the squadrons while the ship is repairing via the 'N' hotkey.

Ok if it is so then it is so
Didnt know about the hotkey, I think I used the right mouse button in the repair screen if im not remembering incorrectly..

Yeah, if you right-click on the ship in the repair screen, you can't access the squadrons that way (they aren't yellow), but you can see them.
The 'N' hotkey displays all "naval" air units, meaning those on board ships at that moment.

RE: Do carrier air squadrons train when the ship is repair?
They do train but from my experience at a lower rate than in a TF at sea or if off the carrier & on a base
RE: Do carrier air squadrons train when the ship is repair?
They train while the ship is reparing..so do seaplanes..
A great way to train up your float plane crews in ASW and Naval Search is during upgrades and repairs..no reason to have either skill below 60 with this method fairly quick.

Warning-if at high training onboard ship then watch out for over 50% frame fatigue. This can be a bad situation if going into combat-will cause increased casualties when compared to enemy planes w/ less frame stress.
This is a major issue and u have to manage training, frame rest, and combat. For a quick fix sometimes I will on purpose transfer a CV sqn in port to same base airfield which will force all planes to repair to 0 frame fatigue.
RE: Do carrier air squadrons train when the ship is repair?
Frame fatigue ... you´re not talking about pilot fatigue, right? Where can I see the level of frame fatigue in a certain squadron? Tracker only?
Cheers

Click on "Planes" at the bottom of the air unit screen.

If you load squadrons on AKs in training mode, they will train but inefficiently while being shipped. I would always take squadrons off before major repairs. In some cases you may get a warning about too many planes aboard (depending on type of damage being repaired) because they're in the flippin' way! I would presume that planes on repairing ships will not take off or land, but will train at the same rate as if they were packed on an xAK. It's above my pay grade as to whether carrier capable sqds will log time towards carrier trained status but I would hope not.
Another thing related you may notice at times would be sqds with no planes set to train, they may very well, but again inefficiently.

I'm certain they go full speed while anchored as far as achieving carrier trained status, as it should be. I believe that they otherwise train normally whether dispersed or docked.
To put your other point in another way, would anyone put a troop ship in for repairs while fully loaded with troops? Oil tanker with oil? Does anyone expect their sub crews to stay aboard while the boat is being repaired?

I'm going to have to take back what I posted earlier. I have had sqds training to be carrier trained on carriers that were dispersed etc., but I cannot claim what I did (that they train efficiently, for carrier trained status or otherwise). I generally have them in TF but basically parked in harbor. This too often happens that I say stuff like I know what I'm talking about when I don't. We need Bullwinkle, Alfred or a number of other knowledgeable people to comment on this. Regardless, unload your carriers before putting in for repairs.
RE: Do carrier air squadrons train when the ship is repair?
For Carrier Trained status, I believe they just have to be on the ship for 90 days. I'm pretty sure they can be stood down, so long as they're on the ship. I don't know if those 90 days need to be consecutive, but I imagine so.
I've had groups become Carrier Trained just sitting on a CVE in harbor.

RE: Do carrier air squadrons train when the ship is repair?
I can attest (really) from experience that they need not be consecutive, having taken such units off carriers and later put them back on to complete the training. You shouldn't stand down units not near the front, you should always be training them at something, for instance, fighter sqs should train to 70 int the following (in this order, usually) air, strafe, low ground and low naval. TBs (allied) NT, NB and ASW. DBs (allied) NB, NS, GA, ASW perhaps and REC. LBs GA, NS ASW and depending on model NB, lowN, lowG and even TR. Dedicated search/patrol craft should be trained also in ASW NB as they will attack those when opportunities arise, and REC. Some of them make excellent TRs too.
I presume (but don't know) that you shouldn't overstock your training carriers. Also, when new sqds arrive with few planes, turn replacements off and upgrades off because you can fit more of them on a carrier to become carrier trained.

That is correct. You can also still use then until they're carrier trained...they just suffer higher fatigue and possibly higher opps losses.
