Keeping notes with Word, NotePad while playing ?

Post by Richard III »

Any way to keep a text editor like Notepad, WordPad, or Word open while playing, and get to it by minimizing the screen to keep in progress game notes ?

I run the game in windowed mode, and I set the resolution just the right size (set by experimentation) to have WITP take up the whole screen except the Windows task bar at the bottom. I use the task bar to switch back and forth between applications.

Here is a sample set of switches that I use. Note the width and depth switches.
"C:\Matrix Games\WITP AE - PBM #1\Beta2\War in the Pacific Admiral Edition.exe" -altFont -cpu4 -dd_sw -archive -wd -pxf1920 -pyf1018 -noFire

Make sure you set up the shortcut to "Run Maximized".

I have dual monitors and run in windowed mode. Switching back and forth is easier in windowed mode.

I run in windowed mode with the Word doc up on the second screen as well. If you wait for an "input prompt" from the game replay, you can switch back and forth without messing up the animations. The game does OK with switching focus while it's "doing" stuff, like naval search reports or opening up a naval battle (you won't see the splashes or other animations) or air combat (you won't see the planes), but if you wait until you have to click "Done" or something, it has no problems.

I could run in "full screen window mode", but I hate hiding the taskbar so that it's not in the way...others might not have that preference. I have tried to run WITP on the secondary monitor, but something about the video routines for the program make it not update graphically at all, even if I start the game on that monitor.

Like wdolson, I use two monitors. The game runs in windowed mode on the primary monitor using a custom screen resolution just
slightly smaller than the max resolution. I then have direct access to Tracker, Reporter, Excel, and Word docs on the second
monitor.

Been doing this for a long time and works a treat. I also read the Combat reports etc in text mode, makes locating event much eaisier.

I run full screen and alt-tab between word pad and the game. Only problem is when going back to the game I have to double hit the tab because Windows 7 seems to think that the desktop is a program.

I also found that it took longer when switching this way. Going to windowed mode made switching faster. Tweaking the resolution as I did gave me just about full screen, not quite full because I prefer to keep the bar at the bottom accessible.

Thanks. That works great & is what I was hoping to do.

Maybe try duel monitors when the Commissar Tsarina approves the expenditure..

My video (built into motherboard) does not deal well with the explosions, firing, and other animations that AE uses. That switch makes AE just use the base pictures.

In the laptop I am using now, I don't have to worry about delays. In my prior laptop, I would alt-tab at the end of the turn and use the Combatreport to write my little personal history/AAR. It was far faster than trying to Alt-Tab ten to twenty times while running one turn.

Yeah, but I've gotten used to it now. And with the current laptop I am using, there is no lag.
