OT Georgia no longer on my mind

Post by topeverest »

So I must bid adieu to Georgia as I transfer to big Texas around Houston.

Anyone got the skinny on some good military focused attractions I can bag with the sons within about 4 hours of Houston?

A good start is San Jacinto battlefield. The view from the top of the San Jacinto monument is impressive (it's taller than the Washington monument; everything is bigger in Texas !). Next door is the USS Texas.

Enjoy!

P.S. Keep your eyes open for flight shows given by Commemorative Air Force (formerly known as the Confederate Air Force). Periodically they will give a show where they bring in all of their wings from across the country. I saw this air show in Galveston way back in 1982. Seeing a B-29 in flight is impressive.

I assume that would include San Antonio and the Alamo too?

Hit the submarine at Galveston (the Seawolf, I believe). Then stop by Colonel Bubby's military surplus store. Some really cool stuff there, it's huge, and even rumored to be haunted.

The Presidio La Bahia in Goliad is also cool, although small.

A weekend at Fredricksburg would be worth your time. They have a nice WW2 museum there.
