Atlanta Class cruising speed and range

Post by el cid again »

The stock database has all seven sub variants of the Atlanta and Oakland CLAA
specified as 8500 nm at 15 knots. This is a reasonable value and may be correct.
However, it neither works well with carriers nor cruisers that have cruising
speeds of 20 knots, and it also isn't official. The official class data, formally
for the "Juneau" class, is 6440 nautical miles at 20 knots. [See US Cruisers,
USNI, p 477)

I think you miss the point of the game.

TFs move at the speed of the slowest ship. It is irrelevant what Wikipoedia says about endurance at 20 knots. A TF moves at a set rate. The game designers decided on 15 knots as a "standard" cruise speed for warships. Having a 20 knot cruise speed for a vessel, and a corresponding endurance, does nothing except gratuitously burn fuel for the sole purpose of having a "pretty" database.

Don't care much about stock, but Babes has normalized all warship endurance to the 15 knot standard. Atlantas and Oaklands are purt-near spot on.

[ed] Babes uses the actual, physical, published, USN fuel consumption/endurance tables that give endurance at any speed. The Brits have similar published tables. The Japanese have done so for a very few ships, but the math for doing it for all is incredibly simple and found in virtually every textbook on Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering. The value of the constants are taken from evaluation of the published US and UK data.
