Detaching units?

Post by Kanov »

As we can merge two distinct BG's on the strategic map was there any talk about implementing an un-merge sort of command to detach certain units? I think it could be a nice addition to send reinforcements to other weak BG's already engaged or somewhat far to merge each other.

Would be like creating an additional custom BG on the fly at the movement phase I guess. Several rules would need to be implemented to avoid having lots of small BG's on the map, although the implicit downside of having lots but very weak BG's could be deterrent enough to not overdo it by the player.

-The BG that is going to have its units detached would need to be by itself on a map.
-The minimum size of the detached unit would need to be established on the code or data files, be it by number of actual men or some sort of unit size. A battalion sounds about right to me.
-The name given to the task force is the name of the senior company commander or just a generic name like Detached Unit No. 3, this could help with limiting the number of detached units at any given time too by providing a counter (only five Detached units can be at the same time on the strat map for example).

I considered something like this for LSA, but the UI to support it would be fairly complicated, and the ability to 'support' another BG was done via borrowing teams from the reserve BG. Given that the BG/strategic map concept is changing significantly in the new engine, it's not really applicable to future versions, but it is a good general idea that may still see some use if we go back in that direction.
