Rome II Total War

Post by Yogi the Great »

Sorry just wanted to separate this discussion.

Rome II was a must buy for me until the post in current state of suggesting it was no good. Any comments from people about it before I decide if I will spend $60. [&:]

It's totally different from the first one but yes it has 1000 issues with it. Just look at the user scores at Metacritic it has gotten the lowest score in the history of TW games. It's as bad as Empire when it came out. If I had it to do over Ii wouldn't have gotten it. If I didn't have a digital DL from steam I'd sell you my copy if you still wanted it. Worst purchase of my gaming life. At least other sorry games I still wanted to play I don't even want to play this mess.

Here’s Tom Chick’s review, it’s not too in depth, but my guess is he simply couldn’t stomach playing the game for long. This sentence says it all:

The more I play Rome II, the more I feel a crushing sense of disappointment and even betrayal.

Angry Joe hasn’t done a review yet, but here’s a video he did showing a lot of the problems with the game.

I own it, and Rome 1 was my most played TW game. But it's been so long since I have played it that I do not remember much from it. They have removed things like the Family tree. One turn is a year long. There doesn't really seem to be any season on the campaign map. People complain a lot of about the AI, and the videos show what I consider the AI bugging out. I think people are little overzealous on the title. It's a simpler game, but I don't always find that a bad thing. The UI is worse.

Since you did not buy it yet, I would suggest waiting. CA still needs to optimize it yet, although load performance is much better compared to shogun 2. AI needs some fixes. I am sure that there will be some good sales on it around x-mas time.

I got it for $34, so that might be the reason I am not as harsh on the game. Also, I only have 8 hours played, so it's not like have seen all the problems yet. I have had fun those 8 hours. Not seen the glaring stupidity of the AI yet.

Lucky me, Ive bought all the Totalwar games but not this one.  Maybe when and if they work it out and the price drops.  I don't mind full price for a good game but not trash.  Plus I am not paying them to beta test it.[:o][;)][:(]  This is one of the major reasons I don't trust pre-orders[:-]

It's still got the usual Total War issues, primarily bad AI. Some people are experiencing graphics glitches (I'm not), but at least they're being mature and reasonable about it online.

Oh wait...

Seriously, it's a good game, and Creative Assembly are working hard to patch up the problems. You should buy it.

I plan on buying it when its purchase cost is down to less than $20. Call me cheap but I havent liked the reviews so far from players.

One thing you must always consider when reading player "reviews" are that they are the VAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAST minority. They just shout and shriek and make themselves seem bigger.

I haven't/won't play it, but it looks like a lemon. Even the good reviews are saying that it is poorly optimized, which itself will need a patch or two to fix. Throw in goofy AI, laggy turns and map movement, and a confusing UI, and there should be several months worth of patching before it's up to par. I'd say wait and see what kind of attention CA gives it.

To sum up my view: good game, has some issues, I have confidence that CA are working to fix them, don't regret buying it full price.

I have a hard time comparing it to the original honestly. The original RTW wasn't great to me until the realism mods, those really made the game for me, the stock Barbarian Invasion was good though so perhaps if they do a Barbarian Invasion DLC I'll enjoy that more, otherwise I'm hoping we get some realism mods that make the game more faithful to history.

Roma Surrectum... one of the best mods ever. With RS (now version 2.6) there is no need for Rome 2. Huge armies, revamped units, streamlined turns, awesome battles where army location and movement actually matters, it's just all so great. Only downsides are that it has some CTDs and there are some graphic glitches that show up once in a while. EB is good too, but to me the AI was still a bit on the retardo side, plus the 'historically accurate' voice overs were annoying and amateurish in quality. Still a good mod though overall.

For a total war fix, I'd say stick with Rome 1, patch it all up, and grab either the Total Realism mod or Roma Surrectum. With those two your ancient warfare hunger should be taken care of. The kids can have their updated graphics and zombie faced Legionaries with part DEUX.

regardless of how much patches will fix the game, the turns representing a whole year is something i find a big turn off. I imagine that is a good idea if a lot of the period is to be covered, but were the turns for a whole year in Rome Total War 1? they were seasonal in Mediavel Total War 2 which i much preferred.

I agree with seasonal turns being the best. I find it more accurate showing how armies have problems fighting in winter months as they showed in Napoleon:Total War. That was actually one total war game I liked that most reviews were negative.
