Remain on station ?

Post by 39battalion »

This is certainly an impressive game and I have been having some fun exploring its functionality in the first ( air war ) tutorial.

However I cannot get my fighters to remain on station no matter what settings I apply ( I have tried them all ). They always fly toward the distant bogies to engage. I tried setting a support mission well to the north of the home base but as soon as they launched they turn around and head for the bogies even with all their radars set to passive, and "do not engage outside mission area" checked. If I do not set a mission and send them on a plotted course to a destination north of the base they do ignore the bogies and head north, but when they reach their plotted destination they turn around and head back to the bogies !

Is their some way to get your aircraft to " remain on station " ?

Thx for any assistance you can provide.

just tested this. I set an AAW patrol mission to the north. do not engage non-hostile and do not investigate outside patrol area. had their radars on. I launched 12 tomcats and they immediately detected the bogeys and started to heads toward them. totally ignoring the patrol area and mission I had set up for them.

Agree - patrol missions are a little bit flaky to say the least - in respect of trying to keep the aircraft in the box, especially in the case of aircraft that have ordinance. They seem hell bent on expending it come what may.

how about a dropdown or input box where you can select the max radio where your planes will investigate/engage contacts?

isn't that why we have a don't investigate contacts outside patrol area checkbox?

a dropdown or input box would be more flexible.

That's what I was thinking. However, it would be still be useful if the player/scenario designer could define "outside". I've had CAPs deviate so far from station (to "investigate") that they crossed the patrol zone of my second CAP. A nice maneuver in an emergency but counterproductive in most situations

I just posted a message in Tech Support about this very thing. I set up a CAP to protect my surface group and instead of patrolling the designated area my 12 Tomcats took off after bogeys outside the area leaving me with no aircover. I lost a CV, CG and 2 DD's because of it.

hehe well I define outside as being outside the area I designated. even if its 1 inch. if a contact gets close to my patrol area but isn't entering, I can just redraw the box. needs fixed.
