Dropping targets

Maybe I'm missing something, but many times my "Drop all targets" from the unit drop-down menu is greyed... Any particular reason why?

And when my platforms are on a patrol or strike mission and they pick up a target that I don't want them to chase, I order it to drop this particular target, but it reacquires the same target at the same moment. Any way to make a platform clear from a specific target permanently?
