One intense ride

The new Cold War turned hot wargame from On Target Simulations, now expanded with the Player's Edition! Choose the NATO or Soviet forces in one of many scenarios or two linked campaigns. No effort was spared to model modern warfare realistically, including armor, infantry, helicopters, air support, artillery, electronic warfare, chemical and nuclear weapons. An innovative new asynchronous turn order means that OODA loops and various effects on C3 are accurately modeled as never before.

One intense ride

Post by Lord Thag »

This game kinda came out of nowhere for me. I have always liked a good pc wargame, but they have always come in two distinct flavors. On one hand you have you small(ish) unit tactical level games like Combat Mission and Close Combat that model the close up, 'man in the trenches' mayhem of live combat. On the other, you have your more abstracted games that take a nod from all the old Avalon Hill hex and chit games like ASL that model broader strokes. I've always liked both.

Having just bought a laptop, I was looking for a new wargame to play (been awhile) and stumbled on Flashpoint Campaigns. WWIII sounded like a fun setting, so I bought it.

I'm surely glad I did. Played through the tutorial a couple of times and then a small scenario every night this week.

And I have to say this: Red Storm is without a doubt the most tense, bloody, edge of your seat nail biter of a wargame I've played to date. How in the hell you devs pulled that off in a bloody hex and chit game is beyond me, but it's the truth. I'm sure my neighbors think I'm nuts as I've shouted 'goddamn it get into position!' more times than I care to admit this week. An hour goes by and I don't even notice, I'm so focused. The limited orders option is brilliant fun, and the AI, I am reasonably sure, has a contract with the devil at times. I've played through A Time to Dance thrice now and it's almost exhausting. This game is ... unrelenting, that's the word.

It's like this. You can walk around one of those gaudy mall knife stores with all the cheap swords and whatnot everywhere and think 'those are cool'. Then one day you go to the museum and see a razor sharp katana on display that was made by some master smith who slaved lovingly over it for years, and you realize you've never seen a real sword before.

This game is a sharp as that sword.

We are happy you are enjoying the game. We are in the process of dealing with a few glitches out of the chute but for the most part it's been a smooth launch. Check out the forums. If you have any questions, fire away.
OTS is looking forward to Southern Storm getting released!

Thanks for the kind words.

A lot of time and effort went into making this 'sword' as well.

From my perspective FPC is like a good book. The more you read, the more you get drawn into it. (Maybe I feel that way since I wrote so many pages of briefings...[:D]) The good news is that the saga has only begun! Already the outline is drawn, fresh paper has been placed and the pen is in hand. Seems as though it's about time to write the second book of the series. Wherever that takes us, and there is discussion ongoing about the location of the next installment, we will endeavor to create the same kind of gaming experience you got from FPC.

Good Hunting.

I would like to adhere to the words of Lord Thag and also say that some of the things FPC has are really innovative. For instance, the fact that minefields are depleted after some units got hit, something that I hadn't seen in any game so far. The changing weather as well...and I could go on.

The game is the best wargame release in a long time I feel. Taken into account Gameplay, Visuals and state of release oh and finally but very important great developers who listen to the community. Other developers should take note.

Good to hear there's more on the way. I will certainly pick up future titles. I'm also looking forward to what the community creates for Red Storm in the months to come. It's nice to be surprised like this. Truly new wargames with this kind of polish are about as rare as Bigfoot these days.
