Distant Worlds - Crash Dump - 1.9.0.11

Post by AceOfKings »

I don't know if this is a feature to stop people playing through the night. As you can see I was playing this at 3:00am and thought it wasn't even midnight!

I'm not a computer wiz but the techies on this forum might want to see your system specs. I was playing until about 1:30am last night (Eastern time). Its easy to forget about the time playing this game. I think this is a great game though.[:)][:)][:)]

To avoid 'out of memory conditions', keep the following in mind:

* On non-64bit OS, limit the galaxy size some. Stay clear of 1400 stars. I usually play at 1000 stars on a 32bit Win XP system, and even that looks to be a bit much.
* Do not reload games within one gaming session too often; quit out of DW completely, instead. What constitutes too often may depend on galaxy size and development. But to be on the safe side, you should continue from a complete restart of the game every time you load a saved game. (In said 1000 stars games and ~20 years into a game I can reload once or twice without quitting out of DW; if I do it more often, I will run into an 'out of memory' eventually.)
* Sometimes it is possible to just 'continue' after receiving an exception, then save and continue from the saved game. This doesn't apply when the exception is 'out of memory', though. Regardless, I wouldn't trust the save to be not corrupt in such situation and rather return to an older save. For this reason I alternate between different save files (but because of their size I do not keep too many).

When running Distant Worlds on 32-bit editions of Windows you should set the /3Gb switch in the system settings. This will allow Distant Worlds to access more memory and prevent Out Of Memory errors like you describe above. 64-bit editions of Windows already access more memory, so this problem is not generally encountered on those systems.

Follow the instructions at the following link to set the /3Gb switch:

Thanks
