Encircled unit - out of supplies and malus combat modifier

The development team behind the award-winning games Decisive Campaigns: From Warsaw To Paris and Advanced Tactics is back with a new and improved game engine that focuses on the decisive year and theater of World War II! Decisive Campaigns: Case Blue simulates the German drive to Stalingrad and into the Caucasus of the summer of 1942, as well as its May preludes (2nd Kharkov offensive, Operation Trappenjagd) and also the Soviet winter counter-offensive (Operation Uranus) that ended with the encirclement of 6th Army in Stalingrad and the destruction of the axis minor armies. With many improvements including the PBEM++ system, this is a release to watch for wargamers!

Encircled unit - out of supplies and malus combat modifier

Post by Teo_ITA »

Hello everyone! This is my first post, so please, be keen with me! [:)]

I am conducting some test to figure out if there is any malus, as a combat modifier, for an encircled unit inside a town or village. But before going on with the test, I'd like to ask you a few questions:

- has anyone here already conducted this type of test?

- will the encircled unit 'surrender' becouse of lack of supplies?

- when an enemy encircled unit has 0 AP, it means that it won't be able to move/attack or it will simply broke when the combat starts?

EDIT:

- but if an encircled unit has 0 AP, can I simply keep this unit behind my lines and keep moving into the Soviet territory, being however aware that if the hostile 'immobile' unit is in a village/town, it will affect my supplies?

Thanks for your replies!

Ok, I have been testing an entire week end and the some results were confirmed by my hypothesis, while others were not expected. I tried to encircle various type of units and I waited 3 turns to allow the supplies being consumed. All attacks were conducted without artillery bombardment nor air raids. On plains:

- Armor vs Armor (attacking always from 6 hexes. The first name is the attacker, the second the defender) --> supplies of the encircled units ranged between 0 and 22, but in all cases the enemy unit was broken or destroyed.

- Armor vs Infantry --> same situation as above.

- Infantry vs Armor --> same as before, but with some casualties amongst the attacking infantry.

- Infantry vs Infantry --> enemy units broken, a few losses for my men.

- Armor vs Support (Katyushas, Tank Destroyer Brigades and Nebelwerfers) --> occasionally, some losses for my armor but most of time, I suffered 0 hits and all the enemy units were destroyed.

- Infantry vs Support --> same as before, with slightly higher losses when attacking Soviet TD Brigades.

In urban terrain, I've only tested infantry and armor, with some unexpected results:

- Infantry vs Infantry --> after 3 rounds and up to 5, the defender stood firm. The supplies were constantly kept at 100 and this seemed a bit unrealistic, since the inhabitants of a village should consume much more supplies than the troops alone. The defender collapsed after 8 turns. The artillery barrage was useless, as well as the air support. High losses for the attacker.

Armor vs Infantry --> Tanks and TD are useless in a street-to-street fighting. I haven't tried however the support brigades (Stugs)

Infantry vs Supports --> High losses for the attacker after 6 turns. Sometimes, the enemy units panicked but were not destroyed.

Hi Teo,

Its important to understand the difference between supply consumption and actual supply delivery. Its possible supply consumption remains at 100% for several rounds even when supply delivery is 0 if the unit does not suffer significant readiness dammage.

No towns or cities generate supply unless they happen to be the location of a supreme HQ (OKH,Stavka).

best,
Vic

Dear Vic. Thanks for your quick response. But here comes another question: readiness (which is represented by the 3 green triangles, ins't it?). Is it affected only by combat? Or even by supply delivery?

Oh, I forgot to say that all the tests were conducted with the Hardcore Supplies rules on (yes, it took about 30 seconds to my pc to calc everything but I'm trying to play with as much realism as possible!

PS: Decisive Campaigns Case Blue is probably the best turn strategy game I've ever played... and I will use it as as a 'base' for my second alternate history book!

Combat reduces readiness
Movement reduces readiness
Not having (enough) supplies reduces readiness

Units with lower readiness require more supply consumption in order to recover readiness.

This also explanes why in your tests it took you more turns to destroy encircled units in urban hexes. They take less readiness dammage in combat and thus consume less supply and thus manage to hold out longer.

Happy to hear you like the game. Always good to hear.

Vic..I'm not normally an Operational level wargamer but I to think DC:CB is one of the best Operational scale wargames out. Very rare for em to get immersed in a game at this scale but DC does it for me. My only complaint\wish is that I'd have loved to see some DLC expansions following a Corps similar to the one included in the game..that is my fav part of the game. Would you one day do some mini expansions following one particular Corps?

Sorry TEO for hijacking your thread.. can I recommend three books you'll love ...A novel "The Red Horse" by E Conti and then his memoir "Few returned" also "Sacrifice on the Steppe" by H Hamilton.
