Starting TOAW III today

Post by bluth »

Hi,
I bought TOAWIII some time ago and I just got into it now, and I must say it's the most complex wargame i've ever played.
I know there is probably some other thread like that on the forum but i can't find them.
So I've got a few question and if you could help me get started that would be great !!

1)I've seen that there is tutorial scenario made by the community but i can't find them does somebody have a link ?

2)What s currently the best graphic mod avaiable ?

3)IS there a mod to change NATO counter for more "visual" representation of the unit ? i know grognard doesnt like that but it ll really help me !

4)I ve got the 3.4 update installed but are they any unofficial patch worth installing ?

5)And last (and sorry for the fans...) is TOAWIII still the best operational on the market or is there a more user friendly simulation with a scenario database as amazing as TOAW ?

Thanks for your help !

1) I created a sceanrio called Tutorial '41, including a set of slides. There are other scenarios, too. The tutorials that came with the game are Tannenberg '14 and Kasserine '43. The links for the Tutorial '41 and the slides are here:

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/562 ... torial.zip (slides)
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/562 ... 0%2741.zip (scenario and equipment file)

The Tutorial '41 folder should be copied in the Graphics folder of the TOAW III main directory. In case you encounter any issues, drop me a line: oberst.w.klink@gmail.com

I might need to update some aspects of the Tutorial, e.g. the PO and objectives, but it gives you some interesting insights of the game and its mechanics.

I prefer the latest graphics mod from Telumar: http://thetoawbeachhead.wordpress.com/

Icon mods AFAIK are available, but not specifically for modern units.

I notice that graphics mod is called "classic redux". Is it different from what you get when you click on the installed shortcut with the game called "install classic TOAW graphics"?

It is a mod for the new graphics, not the pre-3.4 'classic' ones. Telumar did a great job and it enhances even the gaming experience IMHO.

I ve got one last problem, on Rugged Defense most of the scenario are for older version of TOAW so I can't play them, is there any way to convert the scenario for TOAWIII ?

Great stuff...I have had this game since it came out, and am still learning more & staying up later and later, playing bigger & bigger scenarios...[:D]
Question: If I want to install these graphics, what folder do I put them in, and what does that have to do with the (many) graphics folders for the individual scenarios? [&:]

BTW, Oberst Klink, my wife is getting ready to shoot me for desertion, because all I do is play your Kharkov '43 beta (and that's not the fine-tuned deluxe edition (this one has some extra Germans). I think I am doing much better, but saw what happened when I counted my eggs before they hatched on the first game.

Hey Prusssian Tom dude: you might want to consider playing using the new AA-patched exe of TOAW. You can get it here:

http://www.mediafire.com/download/x9a2u ... part+3.zip

John Fogger and I are playing Ron's Mod using it and Dan Phipps and I are using it for Kharkov '43 and we consider it a god-send.
Gameplay is a tiny bit different using it since AA fire is working as it's supposed to now. Kudos to the developer who built it.

EDIT: It might help considerably if I tell you it's 3.4.202 w/ three bytes changed in the code. That's my understanding.
His is going to be the most world-wide anticipated obituary in the history of the world, that I will tell you. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Thanks Larry. I think I'm using it(?)....(AA2opart3.exe). [&:]

I got it from the forum; Herr Oberst turned me on to it. [:)] I am playing his Kharkov '43. I think one more tweak is coming out...deleting some German units that were not there, historically. I've been playing it like a meth freak with OCD [:-]. It is THAT much fun.

When I can stomp the PO, I'll work up an AAR, send it to Herr Oberst, and try PBEM. [:D]

Oberst Klink (and the rest of you [&o] "the giants.") are great. I've had it since Talonsoft issued it (COW). TAOW III is much better; I'm still picking up lots of good technique. Learning new tricks of the trade. It's still infinitely re-playable! That's a great bang for my buck. It's fun, and people help out everyone. (I wish guys like you were running the country....but I digress.[>:]

Thanks a bunch. I have a lot of material you have placed on the forum, and the latest D 21. One of these days, I'm going to have a go at that.[:'(]

Right before Herr Oberst posted the Kharkov '43 scenario, I stomped the Allied PO for Bob Cross' CFNA. Not much of a trick, consider how many times I have played it (well over 100...I know what the PO will do). Oops...there I go again. I write like I talk. [8|]

Thank again. You guys rock! [&o][&o][&o] ("We're not worthy," "If you book them, they will play!"). Wayne's World"
