There's a video available over on YouTube called The Navy's Modern Warships. It was on the National Geographic channel and is now available for viewing in it's entirety (1H30M). It's pretty interesting and focuses on the US Navy's new LCS ships Freedom and Independence during some of their testing.

Personally I have to say I prefer the command style of Commander Olin on the Independence. Quiet professional confidence and leadership seems preferable when someone is in charge of a multimillion dollar naval asset and crew. As I say, just my opinion.

The Freedom's commander seemed a little too adolescent..

On the other hand, Pat Thein (Freedom CO) is your tactical ship commander's commander. This is the guy you want on the pointy edge when the balloon has gone up. Every CO has his/her own command style, and be aware that they may have dialed it back conscious of whatever the PAO's guidance might have been for NG cameras. Plus that is the personality I want for someone in Surface Warfare - get 'em and keep 'em coming. God Bless him, he knows exactly what the limitations are of the Surface Warfare Mission Module and he is still making sure that it's 100%. Personally I giggled in the part where he went out on the bridge wing and someone, I think it was him, said "We're gonna sink it" in a sing-song fashion. And he showed his edge when the SSDF crew didn't have the ready ammo up.

On the other hand, the Independence CO is exactly what I think of anti-submarine guys. Barring taking someone from sub ops and making them an ASW type commander, he's slow, methodical and cautious. Anything else will get your ship sunk from under you by a torpedo. So in the end, I think they also got their missions partly by their superiors knowing the type of personality they have.
