torpedo depth

Post by PaulWRoberts »

Are limits on torpedo launch depth modeled in the game?

I was under the impression that IRL torpedoes cannot be launched at more than shallow depths, but I've just seen one of my subs launch a torp at another sub while both were traveling below 200 meters.

Also, the torpedo itself is shown to be cruising at a depth of 10 meters--is this WAD?

Torps can indeed launch from deep depths. And if aimed at a surface vessel or a shallow/periscope level submarine, they will rise toward the surface towards their target obviously, eventually passing through the 10m depth.

I see, but I'm describing a sub at 200m launching against a sub at 300m and seeing the torp run at 10m. Is that intended?

Depends on the torpedo. You never mentioned which one.

For example, the British Spearfish torpedo with pump-jet propulsion can only run at its fastest speeds while at shallow depths. It slows down the deeper it goes. Though range is largely unaffected.

Curiously MK48 goes ~just as fast at depth, instead its range seems to shrink when running deep.

Anyway, a Spearfish (or torp with similar propulsion characteristic) attack profile against a distant submerged target might involve rising to achieve very fast 80kt+ shallow depth speed in order to quickly close the distance and only diving for the endgame.

Thanks--that behavior is exactly what I was wondering about.

This was a typical USN Mk48 torpedo launched from an improved LA-class in "Trapped Under the Ice." Does this torpedo pop up and then dive on its target?

Hi Paul,

Which build was that in? ISTR we had this problem in v1.00 but it was fixed in one of the subsequent updates. Thanks!

This was in either 460 or the beta immediately prior. (I can't recall whether I played it right before or after downloading 460.)
