Launch as group unassigns aircraft?

Hi, In the "Brass Drum" scenario, I made a CAP mission, and since there's no other way to do this, I manually launched pairs of F/A-18s as groups.
However, when they were launched they were listed as "unassigned" and I had to reassign them.
Does manually launching as groups unassign aircraft?

Btw I also had my CAP aircraft wandering all over the map chasing every single enemy plane.
Also they didn't RTB after shooting their AMRAAMs
