CmdOps.exe/COTA.exe has stopped working (SOLVED)

Post by RangerX3X »

Today BftB stopped working, and surprisingly so did COTA. I played BftB several times this morning then all of a sudden when trying to select one of the in game menu options I receive a pop-up message stating "CmdOps.exe has stopped working" or "COTA.exe has stopped working" (for that game) and that Windows is searching for a solution (but none is given).

I tried everything from restarting my PC, to shutting it down and letting it sit then starting up again, and I just uninstalled (and deleted all C drive leftover files) and reinstalled. From go I received the same message, even at each incremental step when installing HttR as well as the latest public beta patch.

Any ideas on how to get this game working again?

I feel like a dumb ass however I do not know why exactly. I had unplugged my headphones from my W7 machine to use them on my WXP machine to play Madden Football, and when I was done I left them plugged in to the old machine.

My new machine had no headphones (or other speaker output for that matter) and each time I started COTA or BFTB, the game would crash.

I noticed my headphones on the old gaming rig and moved them over, and now COTA and BFTB works just fine. And this can be replicated.

I am glad I am only drinking Diet Caffeine Free Coke right now...

Hmmm, this looks like when trying to initialize DirectSound we get a null device or something (which is frankly weird, since the sound card is evidently still plugged to your motherboard). That's quite a nice catch, Ranger.
